how long for dinner?

i know there is a sticky for timeliens but i'm having trouble deciphering them...we are planning to haev dinner from 6:30-7:30 with speeches half way through. is that too long?  we are serving salad and a main (it's a plated meal).

Re: how long for dinner?

  • Nope, people tend to eat pretty fast!
  • I think ours is just under an hour with speeches towards the end.  We aren't having a very long reception, so we are trying to crunch everything together as much as possible.  I think plated meals also tend to go faster then having a buffet.  Maybe you could check with your caterer and ask their opinion...?

  • We have an hour scheduled for dinner but that includes speeches, cake cutting and dessert.  I think an hour is fine.

  • I think an hour is perfect. We have te same amount of time for dinner, cake, and speeches. People scarf food down, so that is just the right amount I believe.

  • I have 2 hours set for dinner.  It's buffet and around 250 people so people have to get up, fill their plate and sit back down.  Our DJ is willing to start the dance early if everyone finishes up early.  It's really nice to have that option.

  • An hour should be good for two courses. We had four courses (including cake), between courses we visited tables and the DJ did games, so that would have stretched it out. The meal didn't feel long, but it somehow took like 2.5 hours. I was really surprised when I found out how long it took, it did not feel that long at all!
  • WE had 2 hours set for dinner/ toasts/ cake cutting etc... then break.. (clear the room to set up for dancing) ...

we only used hour and a half... and it was more than fine...

we had 3 plates... (soup/ tortierre/ then main plate) oh then cake...
  • Dinner went extremely quickly (we had a salad course and then the main course) so I think an hour is just right.
