Invitation Vent!

We're running our invite envelopes through our printer...I don't have nice script handwriting, hate the look of labels, and calligraphy isn't in the budget.  This worked out really well for our STDs...a few envelopes got messed up, but it was pretty easy to do.

Today, we started this whole process for our invites and all hell broke loose!  We started with outer envelopes and printer #1 (our laser printer).  The printer smudged about every 3rd envelope to the point where you coudn't read the address clearly.  So we gave up on that printer and moved to our 2nd printer (the ink jet).  This stopped the smudging but the address would come out uncentered (like to the point where it was almost off the envelope) on a good number of envelopes.  There was no rhyme or reason to this...it would work on a few envelopes in a row and then fail. (this pattern repeated pretty much all day).  It's not like we couldn't get it set up at all...more like it would randomly stop working.

Originally, I ordered about 20 extra envelopes but now we're out of envelopes.  We didn't even get to the inner envelopes or the response envelopes!  I said bad words, FI said bad words, there may have been a bit of violence against the printer LOL!

So, I just ordered more of all 3 envelopes...more outer envelopes to finish up plus extra for when they mess up.  Plus, I'm assuming this will be the problem for inner and response envelopes so I preemptively ordered more of those as well.

**sigh**

Re: Invitation Vent!

  • This happend to us. Finally we said screw it and went to Staples and got clear labels. We just did about half today and honestly they came out better than expected. I'd just give up and get the clear labels. You can hardly tell at all that there is a label there. Good luck!

  • Oh by the way, how did you get your invite counter siggy centered? I can't seem to get the "invited" part centered. The rest is centered but just that one part isn't.

  • I'm really adamant about not using labels. Sorry, I just really hate them on wedding invites. Every wedding invite FI and I have received recently has had a label on it and 99% of the time they are smudged and cheapen the look of the invite. Sorry, just my personal opinion. As far as my ticker... I think I I inserted a break
after every line on my siggy. That keeps everything separated and centered on its own line...usually.

  • Hopefully you get this figured out and don't waste too many envelopes!

I understand the printer frustration totally today... I was about ready to chuck the stupid thing out the window.  After all my hard work on my DIY invitations I thought I was just going to have to say screw it to everything, thank goodness it magically decided to start working again.

    Good luck!!
  • I had to switch from using my inkjet to my FI's laser because of smudging. I'm surprised you're having a problem with the laser printer, they don't use wet ink.
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  • This worries me for when I print mine out....stress...I hope you finish the rest without much more trouble. I think the feeling you get when you send them all out will be worth it.

</div><div>It's not necessarily a smudge...I think the dry ink is depositing on the envelope weird and causing it to be really hard to read.  At least the ink jet is working...sometimes.  I ordered the extra envelopes, so hopefully I can finish these up when those come in.</div>

  • Have you considered this option?  It would be time consuming, but I bet they would look amazing!

  • That is a great idea!

I feel like I'm at the point of no return though...I've only got about 10 outer envelopes left.  I still have all of the inner envelopes and the response envelopes to do too, but I feel like it would look funny if the outer envelope had computer printing and the rest "fake calligraphy" lol.  If I had seen this before, I totally would have considered it!

  • Totally, if you had printed the inner envelopes first it wouldn't look weird to do calligraphy on the outside envelope.  You are right though, the reverse would be weird.
Good luck!  I hope the rest come out better!
