Re: QOTD 6/14

  • Fun question! :) We haven't spent Christmas together yet (I know! We were waiting), so I'm excited. We will spend Christmas Eve & Day with his family, as we will have a new niece (our first!) and want to be there for her first Christmas. Shortly after Christmas (I guess the 26th or 27th), we will drive down to spend some time with my family. Unfortunately, both families don't live close enough to do the 24th with one and 25th with the other or even see both on the same day.

  • We've been living together for the past 2 1/2 years so we'll spend Christmas the way we have been. We wake up and do presents with each other and our animals, then we do breakfast with my family, then early dinner with his family and then another dinner with my family . . . it's a busy day.

  • I'm hoping we'll be able to spend a bit more quiet time together. We usually have 5 or 6 Christmas events to get through between the 24-26th.

  • We've been alternating Thankgiving and Christmas between the families for several years now.  This year we'll be spending Christmas with my family.

  • We will do what we have been doing.  Christmas eve his family has a huge get together so we will be there, stay over at his parents (since we live there right now), Christmas morning at the house then drive down the 2 hours to my family for the night.  Christmas is split between the two, Thanksgiving is my parents and Easter is his.  :-)

  • Not sure. Last christmas was our first christmas in our new house so we opened gifts and then spend Christmas Eve with my family (since we are Italian and i wouldnt dare skip this feast) and then Christmas Day was with FI's family in CT.
We usually do this every year and I would like to continue spending Christmas morning opening gifts just us and then alternating, but we will see. I hate travelling during the holidays and right now we only have one nephew so its nice to spend the holidays with my family. FI's sister is in MD and that is just a pain, but again we wont decide until after thanksgiving.

  • I'm not sure yet!  I have always gone back to IA for Christmas, and every other year he has joined me.  I'm not sure if I will break tradition as a married woman, especially since I'll see my whole family 2 months prior.....

  • We'll be on our honeymoon!! Woo-hoo! We leave on December 22 and get back the 31st....so we'll miss our first married Christmas with family.

  • Not sure yet. FI has a job where depending on his days off and the day Christmas falls on, he may have to work. We'll have to figure it out when his schedule changes in Sept.

We'll be driving to FI's family to spend a few days before Christmas with them. Then on Christmas Day, we'll drive a couple hours to my parents house. It's tiring but it's nice having our parents close enough where we can drive from one to the other in the same day. We're already looking forward to the first Christmas we have a baby, so they can travel to us!

  • I'm not sure yet what we are going to do.  Sadly, we fought about what we were going to do last year.  FI's parets lives about 5 hours away from us and FFIL pretty much refuses to leave his house.  My family has a tradition of staying up til midnight on Christmas Eve and everyone opens their presents then.  I want my stepdaughters to start enjoying that tradition, but FI wants to be at his parents house in the morning so they can open presents there.  His suggestion was to do both and just leave straight from the Christmas Eve thing, like at 2am, and drive the 5 hours to get there by morning.  Um, am I the only one that thinks that's the stupidest idea ever?  Just thinking about all of it, makes me upset.

  • This past Christmas was the first Christmas we had while living together. We will probably spend it much the same way, we open presents together in the morning, run over to his parents house fror brunch and some early afternoon visiting, then we are off to my parent's house for dinner and more visiting.

That or running away somewhere warm.

We'll be on our honeymoon too!!!  We are going December 22-29.  So excited!!  Our family is giving us the guilt trip but it was the only time to work into my teaching schedule!!  We also told them we would celebrate Christmas a little late.

  • We have lived together the last 5 years, so the same thing we do every year. We go to my aunts house x-mas eve and have dinner and do a chinese gift exchange. Then x-mas day we wake up and go to my parents house for x-mas breakfast and to open presents, then to my gramma's later in the day to open gifts with her.

His mom hasnt really been in our life since she went crazy, and then passed away this past November, so that wont change. I think when we first met I had one or two x-mas's at her house before we moved out and she went insane. He will most likely go see his dad in the nursing home x-mas night and have dinner or go for lunch.

  • We are super lucky, his family is Orthodox and my family is Catholic. On the 24th we go to mass with my Dad because it is his birthday and he is the choir director of his church. On the 25th we go to my grandmothers house.

On Jan 6th, we go to the lighting of the Yule log with his parents. On the 7th we go to his Great Aunts house.

  • We will keep with the same routine, open gifts in the morning at my parents, then go to his family to watch the nieces and nephews open gifts, then back to my parents for dinner.  It's a rat race every holiday.

Both of our families have the main celebration on Christmas Eve, so we will likely do the same thing we have done for the past three years.  Late lunch with my family (all 10 of us) at 3, presents and cookies after clean-up.  Drive 40 minutes to his parents' house for dinner with his family (~50 people).  Then presents, games, and dessert.  After everyone leaves, we help his parents clean up and then go to midnight mass.  Christmas day is pretty relaxed - late lunch at an aunt's house and then head home to unwind.  It's pretty intense, but manageable for now.  Once we have a kid, we'll probably alternate which family we spend the 24th with.
  • I don't want to think about it! We already have family members competing to have Thanksgiving with us, LOL!

  • We'll do what we've been doing the past few years.  My neighbor's have a Christmas Eve (Italian family) gathering/dinner for as long as I can remember.  I can't remember living in this house and not going across the street for Christmas Eve.  We'll sleep at my parents, open gifts, have breakfast and then we'll head over to his parent's house (10 minutes away) and have dinner and dessert there.  Then we come back to my parents house for another dessert.  Love this time of year!!!

  • We will start the morning opening gifts at home. We have a dog this year so giving her gifts to open will be interesting (the cat ignores the presents lol).
We will see both families on the 25th if we can fit it in, otherwise one will be on the 26th. Or we will see my family and his mom on the 25th and then his grandparents on the 26th.

I dont want to think about thanksgiving! When we first got engaged (2010) they told us we would host thanksgiving for his family after we are married in 2012 (at that time they knew it was 2012 but not an exact date).. Im hoping they will have forgotten...  a little under a month after we are married (10/27) trying to host thanksgiving for his large family will be a trip!

  • I'm not 100% certain, we've been living together for a few years now so usually we do christmas eve with my extended family and I believe this year we'll go to my parents house afterwards to do immediate family presents. Then home and a nice, quiet, late morning for us on Christmas Day. Plans may change a little bit because I'm going to be a first time Aunt this fall and I don't know what my sister's plans are, but I'm going to make sure I see the little peanut at Xmas time!
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  • Last year we started 2 traditions, one is to have a picnic for lunch on Christmas eve. The other was scones for breakfast :) Also his parents started a Christmas eve dinner tradition for his nephews so we will probably do that and then Christmas dinner at his sister's house.
