what's needed?

If were going to book a cruise what is needed? I went before and only took my birth certificate and ID card. I was 18 at the time and don't remember anything else.

When I went they said we could have either/or. Has it changed then? I was not even planning for us to have to get those. I don't know how and we probably don't have time now. ETA: we'll just be going to nassau and freeport bahamas and key west FL. That's our only choice by dates and ports close to us.

  • It depends where you are going.

FI and I are going to the Bahamas, and because we are porting out of SC, and arriving back at the same SC port, we were told we did not need a passport.  However, we have them, so we're brining them.

It is highly reccommended to travel with a passport, in the case there is some sort of emergency while you are on the cruise, and you have to fly out.  It is also not too late to get one, you may just have to expedite the order.

This.  If you miss the ship or otherwise get stuck on an island, and need to find a way home you need your passport.  Someone actually did miss the ship leaving port on our first cruise; he had to catch a flight to the next island stop.
It really didn't take too long to get our passports when we did it.

  • If you are going on a 'closed loop' cruise that ends and starts in the US and goes to the Bahamas you can get away with just an ID and birth certificate. All cruise lines strongly recommend a passport. If you are unsure, just call the cruise line to find out.

  • I would check with the cruise line. I've heard you need the Passport. You're probably still within the time frame to get the Passport safely. Mine came in a few days ago, it was less than a month from applying!
