Venting about work

So, I have been feeling majorly burnt out on work lately. I could really use a day off and haven't taken any vacation time since the holidays...only problem is, I can't! I'm trying to save up all the PTO hours that I can right now for my family vacation in August, the wedding, and the honeymoon. I'm taking at least two weeks off total for that stuff, plus I want to leave a cushion in case I need to take any sick time, PLUS my job gives me the option to cash out unused PTO time, and extra money in the wedding fund is always a good thing. So alas, no time off for me. I will finally get to take a day off in three weeks when I have to drive to Delaware for my friend's wedding, and I am so looking forward to that. But I would really like to play hooky for a day and goof off, and that just isn't happening. Commiseration is welcome...I figured if anyone would understand me whining about this sort of thing, it'd be you ladies. :

Re: Venting about work

  • sorry about your work...do you end up working 7 days/week?...things that make me feel better...

    1) 30-minute bubble bath with lights turned off, candles everywhere...no more than 30 mins cause I hate getting pruney...
    2) Pedicures/Manicures
    3) Taking a long walk/hiking (i live in an area though where there's a lot of open space, hills, and unobstructed views of mountains)
    4) Scrapbooking (i get lost in it...but sometimes, I use up too much time!)
    5) Reading (get lost in another story that is not about our busy lives)

Take care! If you're still stressed, can you take a half-day?

  • I can definitely understand. I won't have any "real" vacation time until the wedding and honeymoon. I took a week off in March but that was because I had my gallbladder removed and was recovering from surgery, so not real vacation.

My plan is to take a day off here and there over the summer so I can have a bit of a mental break without really dipping into my vacation time.

  • I know what you mean...

I'm in grad school, and technically we're only allowed 10 days off a year plus about 5 university holidays.  My advisor is super cool about taking more time off if you need to and if you can still manage to get your work done, but I hate to abuse that.  Plus, I'll never finish this Ph.D. if I keep taking time off!  I've been taking a few long weekends to go back home for wedding planning, but I'm not taking any significant time off until the wedding when I'm taking a little over a wk off!

  • Although I'm not in exactly the same boat as you, I can totally understand a work burn out and needing time off. I work in healthcare for a family who is really awesome and almost a second family. However, in the summer's they go up to their cottage 2 hours away from home and I work in week long shifts of 14 hour days and then have a week off. Its sooo hard being away from my FI, family and friends and at about day 3 I'm ready to go back home. And then when I do get home its not really time off because then its catch up for housework, bills, and wedding planning! lol

Hopefully that day of driving will be somewhat of a stress reliever for you! I'm determined to get a couples massage on our honeymoon to relieve all this wedding stress!

  • Oh I'm right with you.  I just started a new job a couple of weeks ago so I won't even have any vacation days for almost a year.  I still work my crappy evening job too until the wedding, so we can afford it. Boooooooo to work.

  • I hear ya!  For the last 3 years, 2 of my vacations were actually taken for surgeries.  In 2010, I did go on a 3 day cruise for my daughter's H.S. graduation; it was a gift from her Grandmother.  No vacation at all last year, the (very small) company I work for dropped all of us down to 1 week vacation and we've never had sick time.

I ended up using last years time, at the end the year when our hours were cut.  I need a new job...well, after I take a vacation!!!  LOL

  • i also understand about work stress!!   Is the weekend you are taking off Memorial Day?  Will that give you an extra day?,  Like a  PP said could you take a half day  or leave an hour early and treat yourself to something you enjoy?
The last few weeks have been crazy for me a really busy time every year.  After next week it will slow down and we have been given a few extra days off, I am so greatful.

What really sucks is that I only get about 16 hours personal time a year.   This means I will have to take some unpaid time right around the wedding.  We have sick and annual time as well but we are only allowed to use annual time when the school is closed and I will obviously not be sick.
