Anyone have experience with burns? I need some good news :(

I spilled near-boiling water on myself at work on Wednesday night. I'll tell you, I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone ever. Anyway, I have a second degree burn on my inside right ankle (right under and around the ankle bone) and a second-thirdish degree burn on the top of my foot. The ankle one is just blistering now, the one on top of my foot is about two inches in diameter and is all bright red and oozy. I don't have insurance so I've been relying on my mom, who's a nurse, and my CWs, who are pharmacists, to make sure it heals properly and doesn't need further medical treatment other than changing the dressing frequently and monitoring it.

My shower is Sunday and I know any cute shoes are out of the question, as I've only been able to get my foot into a pair of my mom's Crocs. I'll probably wear my slippers or something, which sucks because my dress is adorable. :(

No one has been able to tell me (or maybe they don't want to) how long this will take to heal. The burn on the top of my foot is right where the strap of any dress shoes/heels would lie, so even when it heals to the point where I can put a bandage over it, it will still be rubbing against it like crazy. Of course, my dress was hemmed for my specific wedding shoes, which is a huge concern if I can no longer wear them, since I'd most likely have to resort to flats and then the dress would be too long.

Anyone have any idea how long it takes a burn like that to heal? I'd like good news, but I guess an honest answer would be even better. I can't believe this had to happen right now of all times, and I realize I'm lucky it wasn't worse and that shoes shouldn't be my main concern, but it's distracting me from the pain so there. :)

  • Ouchy! That sounds terrible!

Any burns I've had (one hot glue gun and one from putting a mug in the mircrowave and forgetting to put the water in it - bad news) have taken a few weeks.

I don't think it would hurt to start looking for backup options for shoes (but maybe wait until closer to the wedding before making a call). I wouldn't try to put on cute shoes while it's healing though, because you don't want to aggravate it and make it worse. Hope you feel better!
  • according to http://www.burnsurgery.com/Modules/BurnWound%201/sect_IV.htm, superficial 2nd degree burns can heal in 7-14 days, if it's not infected.  Deep 2nd degree burns can take 4-10 weeks, and the 3rd degree one says "except for a very small wound, eg., 2x2 inches, the wound will require excision and skin graft."

Honestly, I would see a doctor about it.  You can work out payment plans at clinics or ERs, and in some extreme cases, Hospital ERs will wipe your bill.  I've had it happen- I had no job and no insurance and they wiped the rest of my gallbladder removal bill (My mom had started making payments and it was just too much to deal with.)

Good luck hun!!!  I had a bad 2nd degree burn a few years back, and it was AWFUL... Thankfully that one was workman's comp approved.  Is there something like that you can get through your job?

  • I am so sorry that happened to you. That sounds really painful. I second pp. Even if you don't have medical insurance, work should cover it. even if you have to pay out of pocket its worth it if it will help heal quickly and you do not want it to get infected and be uncomfortable on your wedding day. The only time i had a bad burn I remember sarna being the best thing for it.
  • About 2 years ago I burnt my hand pretty badly on the stove rack.  I pressed the top of my hand right up against it.  I would say it was a 2nd degree burn, although I never went to the doctor.  My skin is not very resilient. I diligently put neosporin on it daily with a bandaid to prevent infection and pain.  I still have a light scar to this day.  After about a week and a half it started to scar over, which is at least less painful but not so pretty.  I would expect to have a scar, but you should be ok with shoes by your wedding.  Everyone heals differently though.

  • Well I had 2nd almost 3rd degree burns on my hand several years ago and it took several weeks. Everyones healing time is different but you should see a DR.

  • Thanks, everyone! I actually feel a lot better now. You all always know what to say. :)

You're right, kristin, I think looking for back-up shoes now is a good idea, since there will be specific needs and it may be hard to find.

And as usual, you're all right--I should see my doctor. I go to a low-cost clinic for regular medical stuff and they charge $35 for a visit, which I guess is worth the peace of mind. I'll call on Monday and see if they can squeeze me in. If they can give me advice that will make it heal faster, I'm all ears.

    Thanks again! :)

  • I agree with all the previous posters because I've seen nonmedically treated burns turn to bad infections. Go to a dr and since you did it at work, workers comp has to Dover the medical bills. They might not cover time missed from work if it's a second job, but the medical bills should be workers comp.

  • I got a hot oil burn on my stomach back in May (the oil splashed my shirt and I got burned through it) and it got to its worst about 5 days after the initial incident. If you can, go to the Dr. They gave me a sample of cream to put on it 2-3 times a day (I would use a q-tip) and I was supposed to leave it uncovered as much as possible, the air let it breathe. I had to wear bandages over it at work, but when I was home, those babies came off and I walked around with my tank top pulled up like a sports bra and let it breathe as much as possible. It stopped being sensitive a couple weeks after, I'd say. I still have a scar, though.

Good luck! It will be okay!! I agree with PP though, go ahead and have a shoe back up plan!

  • Definitely go see a doctor.  You don't want to end up with a nasty infection.  A few years ago I burned my forearm on the iron and the doctor gave me silverdene (sp?) cream.  It healed it quickly and with little scarring (the scar was faint and faded within a year).  I recommend that on bad burns.

    Good luck!

I saw a doctor! She gave me silvasorb cream (basically the same that you mentioned--it has silver in it to heal the burn quickly).

I also tried on my shoes and it looks like as long as I can loosely cover the burn, the shoes will still work for the wedding.

    Thanks again!
