October 2012 Weddings

New last name giddiness

I work in an elementary school and decided to start the year using my new last name, to limit confusion with the switch in October. I don't have a classroom because I'm the psychologist and I cover the whole building, so everyone has to adjust, not just one classroom (they can't pronounce my maiden name, might as well get extra time to learn the new one). Anyway, I just got the agenda for our opening staff day orientation tomorrow and saw myself listed as "Mrs. NewLastName" and got all excited. :)

Anyone else work in education and are starting to use their new last name early?

Re: New last name giddiness

  • I work with high schoolers but I'm not using my last name early.  I figure they will be able to adjust halfway through, though the Head of School asked me where my husband was at the opening faculty party. :)

  • Ditto previous post.  I work with middle school students and decided to change mid year.  I'll probably still respond to Miss G throughout the year though.

  • We just go by first names in our classroom because we work with special needs children, so I'm just Ms. Jennifer. Last name change won't change a lot :(

  • I teach 4th grade.  I am going to explain to them on Thursday (our first day) that I am getting married next month and I will be changing my name then.  As it gets closer, I'm going to remind them  Hopefully it's a smooth transition.  There was a girl in my class last year who was so excited about me being engaged, she always called me Mrs. new last name.  No one else in the class got it and it was like an inside joke with us.  It was adorable.
  • I'm on the student end : I start my final term for my college program the week of my wedding. Since March 2010 when I began, I've been with the same teachers, everyone knows me, and now I'm switching it up. Hoping its not a pain to change paperwork :

  • I work in an elementary school and am waiting to change my name after the wedding.  I don't think it will be too hard for the kids to make the switch.  They think it's pretty cool that I will have a new last name.  I think it will be weird when I have to contact parents as I will have to remind them who I am!  I am a speech therapist and have worked with many of my families for the past 1-4 years.  I am thinking of sending home a note right before the wedding since my wedding also coincides with conference time.

  • I work at Tim Hortons so name change won't work :P
anyhow in QUEBEC we keep our last names when we marry... :(
    I like FI's last name...

Funny thing is if we decided to hyphenate our future children's last names,
they would be Chevrier-Belisle which translates into
( chevrier)= goat hearder from the (Belisle)= beautiful island)
  • I didn't know there were so many teachers on this board - hooray!  I'm a high school teacher, so I don't think that my students will have too much of a problem with the name change. When I sent out my introductory letter, I mentioned that I am getting married, so they have a bit of a heads up.  A few of my former students stopped by to ask why they weren't invited. It made me smile.
