Do you like your first name?

2»

Re: Do you like your first name?

  • My first name is ok- Lisa. It has always sounded strange out-loud, though. Like it doesn't fit me. My middle name I love: Colleen. It really speaks to my Irish heritage. For years, I wished to go by that, but no one listened to me (product of being the youngest child, I think). But now I make do, mostly because it seems that nobody really addresses me by name anyway :)

I'm in with the other girls with popular names. I'm Jennifer, usually go by Jenn. It used to drive me crazy because there were so many other 'me's' out there. At this point it doesn't bother me, but I wouldn't say I'm in love with it either. Every once in a while I've thought about going by my middle name, Jean, but it's be really hard to switch now unless I got a new job, and a new family :P
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

[QUOTE]I can't believe there are no Jessica's yet...as I am one and absolutely HATE my first name. I go by either Jess or J. Growing up, I always I had to be "Jessica ___" because there were always 4 of us in a class. Now, at work there are 4 of us as well. Just too common of a name.

  • My first name is Lauren, and I really like it.  Easy to spell, easy to pronounce, not overly common.  In fact, I only knew one or two other Laurens growing up.  I think I like it more as an adult than I did when I was younger.

I like my first name, its unique. But its always mispronounced.
My name is Jeanne, but its pronounced as if it doesn't have the ne on the end (Jean).
Kinda similar to robije7, but I get the opposite. I get Jeannie, Jenny, Je-Anne, Janeane
To make matters worse my last name (tho I love that it matches) is similar to my first name so as a kid I got: Jeannie Weenie or Jeannie Beanie.
As a kid I was called Jeannie, so my family still calls me Jeannie or Jeannie Marie. Also my grandmother is named Jean (no ne) so its done to help determine who in the family they are talking to.
The first time my FI was around my family and they called me Jeannie, he started looking around because he didnt know who they were talking to. lol

[QUOTE]I like my name, Sarah, I think it's classic and I like the spelling much better than Sara. I hate when people spell it without an 'h', it just looks so incomplete. Only downside is that it's such a common name! My middle name, Elizabeth, is also very common. I've even met a few other Sarah Elizabeths. But I think the two names sound really nice together, so I can forgive the fact it's so common.

It's a Sara(h) thing. Mine is Sara with no H and I think it looks weird with it. I always tell people at stores and such with a nametag where it's without the H that their name is spelled correctly. ;) I had a native Hebrew speaker explain to me that without the H would be the "correct" spelling by direct translation, but to facilitate it's pronunciation in English, the H was added as sort of a helper letter.

That being said, I don't go by my first name, ever. That started in junior high when there were 3 other Sara(h)s in a class with me. I've always preferred my middle name (Katherine - though I love how Sara Katherine sounds together) and so I finally got to the point where I decided I'd rather be known by it. So ever since then, I've been Kat.

  • Not to brag but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my unique name: Echo. I get asked all the time if it is short for something or "No what's your REAL name?" It drives me crazy, but I just laugh and say "Yeah its my real name I can show you my DL and SSN card if you like."

For some reason people misunderstand it or maybe they think they heard it wrong when I say it over the phone so I get called Becca a lot or Ethel.  Which I HATE. I got a lot of name calling in my younger years and I wanted to change my name to Emily...But now that I'm older I love it and wouldn't dream of changing it.

I don't mind my name, it's Kimberly but mostly I get called Kim.   I go by Kimmie, Kimmer or Kimmer Kay (my middle name) with most of my family even though I am 30 years old!   A lof of my Head Start kids also call me Kimmie or Kimmie Wimmie.

Before I was born my mom wanted to name me Elvira Rosila (like the  Oakridge Boys song and my godmothers middle name).  My doctor refused to put this on the birth certificate so my father named me.  Kay was my grandmother's nickname (short for Katherine), After she found out my name she told my dad my middle name should have been Ivy so that my initials would be K.I,M.

ETA:   I worked with another Kim at my first job she was tall and I am short,  So I became little kim and she was big kim even though we were the same age.  I didn't know another Kim until college when my roommate started dating one.

  • Eh, mines ok. Kimberlee Michelle. Kind of long. I've never met another kim with ee on the end. I always get Kimberly or Kimberley. I have such a long name, 24 letters in my whole name, and fiances last name is 9 long. So there's no way I'm hyphenating!
  • My name is Margaret but I have always gone by Maggie. I love my name! My uncle is responsible for it because my Mom didn't have a name picked out and he said that I "looked like a Maggie". I only had 1 other girl in my high school with the same name.

  • Maggie, that sounds like how my friend's youngest daughter got named! My best friend had absolutely decided to name her daughter Katherine Renee, but when she was born, she named her Kelsey instead because she just looked like a Kelsey. So now she's Kelsey Renee and I agree that it fits her much better!

  • I like my name, Nicole, alot of my friends and family call me Niki (thats how I spell it if I decide to use it that way).  I always had the problem of people spelling it Nichole, and back in middle school kids used to mess around and call me Nic-hole if a teacher wrote my name wrong, just in fun though it wasn't a serious issue, but got old after awhile.

[QUOTE]My name is Jenn. (yes with two Ns). It's short for Jennifer. I don't mind Jennifer, but I don't respond to it. The problem now is my new boss at the restaurant keeps calling me Jennifer, and my boss at the learning centre insists on calling me Jennifer (<strong>even though she calls my mom Kathy, and her full name is Kathryn</strong>) and it's starting to annoy me. But more than anything, I absolutely HATE being called Jenny. And my new bosses at the restaurant keep alternating between Jennifer and Jenny. I try to correct them but they run by me so fast I can't get a word in.

My first name is Kathryn, and I am sure your mom gets it all the time, but it is ALWAYS misspelled. It's not often to know another person with this spelling. I also dont go by Kathy and most people that see my real first name go for that first. I am Katie. I dont answer to my real name...I think it is too formal for me. LOL Maybe as I get older, but I like Katie...or KD (last name starts with D).

<div>Yes, it is unique!  Now I'm curious...how did your parents come up with your name?</div>

  • The name on my birth certificate/DL/etc... is Angela, which I HATE, HATE HATEHATE. Everyone I know, except for my dad's sister (who I don't care much for) calls me Angie.
My mom said I can thank the Rolling Stones for giving my parents the idea of that name.  My dad always says he's not sure why they decided to put Angela on the birth certificate because they called me Angie from day one.
I love my name, always have, always will.  I honestly don't personally know many people with my name, I know its relatively popular though.

  • I don't mind my name so much now that I'm older and can appreciate it.  My name is Ryann (pronounced like Ryan).  It really gets under my skin when people call me Ry-Ann.  When I was in first grade, there was a boy Ryan in my class.  So my teacher took it upon herself to start calling me Ry-Ann.  I hated it.  It also pissed my mother off.  Unfortunately, it stuck through 8th grade ( I went to a small catholic school k-8).  There's still some people to this day who call my Ry-Ann.

Most people expect a guy when they see the name.  My mother said she added the extra N to make it more feminine and also because Ann is a big family name (my grandmother's middle name, my aunt is Joanne, both my cousins' middle names are Ann).

My mother chose my name and named me after the soap opera Ryan's Hope.

As I said, I've grown to appreciate it as I got older but when I was younger I cried all the time about it.

People misspell names all the time.  I just get annoyed at work when people misspell my name in an email.  My name is spelled out right in front of you.  Does it take that much effort to add the extra N that you see on your computer screen? (small rant over).

  • My name is Michelle.  People always seem to spell it wrong.  My FI's mother kept spelling it with one L.  I had to tell her so many times.  There always seems to be more then one Michelle in my classes even at work.

  • I like my first name , Kristina. It is spelled differently, but I did graduate with 3 other Christinas. I was going to be Samantha, but my parents changed their minds. I go by Krissy, but have had people call me Kristy, Kris, Tina or any other nickname and don't really respond to them.

  • I used to hate my name. Dawn. But now that I am older and my Dad is gone I love it. I was born at 4:50 something in the morning... the doctor asked what my name was.. Daddy looked out the window and said "It's Dawn" and so I am :)
I did tease the crap out of my Hubby ( we got married already, having a ceremony and reception in October) when we went to get our marriage license.. I told the lady I wanted to change my middle name to Super Fantastic... well I signed the papers and had to leave to go to work, leaving him there to finalize everything.. when he came to pick me up from work that evening I asked him if he changed my middle name.. and he freaked out.. I thought you were joking OMG I am sorry I didnt do it... I had him convinced for about 15 minutes that I had really wanted it changed and I was mad that he didnt do it !! LOL

    that's my best friend's name!!

my name is Christina and my middle is Valerie.  People always call me Christine and I got Chrissy and tina as a kid (which I HATED!).  A friend of mine called me Val when he learned my middle name.  My fiance loves my names, which is good!
  • I used to dislike my name: Helen. Nowadays I'm fine with it because I like the way Mike sounds when he says it, like it's a nice name. And I like its meanings, like 'Sharp as a needle' and how it may derive from things like the moon. Though no one's ever given me a nickname, I would respond if someone called me 'Nell', because I like that, it is actually officially a nicknake for Helen.
  • Funny, this was our lunch conversation today at work.  My name is Samantha and I love it.  It's a very fitting name for me.  I wasn't a fan when I was little, I used to pretend my parents named me so many other names.  Once I became a teenager, I realized that I loved it and the name was part of who I was.  I do hate being called Sam and Sammy is like nails on a chalk board to me.  My family has always called me by my full name, Samantha.  I was named after Bewitched, which I always thought was fun.
