Think I picked the most expensive flower...

Today I met with the florist to discuss planning and look through some of their portfolios for examples and more ideas, and I think I must have picked the most expensive flower, the Red Rose.  Wow they are pricey!  On the plus side they said they would do what they can to get me what I want at the best price.  The lady helping made a comment that Roses are some of the most expensive wedding flowers, even in the silk world.  Just had to share this.  Have a great day everyone!

Re: Think I picked the most expensive flower...

  • Really? I wonder if that varies at all by area and/or florist. When I met with mine, I told him I wanted something in my colors (deep purple, yellow and ivory) that was in-season and cost-effective and roses were one of the first things he pulled. We ended up with yellow roses and ivory spray roses. But then again those aren't the only flowers I'm using - they'll be mixed in with some cheaper things like stock and a lot of greenery, so maybe that makes the difference. I had always heard that lilies and orchids were more expensive than roses.

  • That surprised me too! I love peonies, but I don't love that they would cost like $5-10 per stem when they are out of season in October! My florist told me that garden roses are my cheaper look alike alternative. Then again, Pocky and I are both from upstate NY, so maybe it's a regional thing??

  • That's weird, when I met with a florist I had some inspiration photos, but the flowers in the photos were really expensive (bouquet would have been $300) so we made a similar look with cheaper flowers (est. $75). One of the types of flowers we're putting in the bouquet are roses because they aren't expensive. It's funny that they said roses are the most expensive when I was told they are cheaper. Especially since you can get bouquets of red roses for $12 at the grocery store...
  • Roses are one of the less expensive flowers to go with, so that's pretty surprising.  Wholesale cost is around $1 a stem, and the average price for an all rose bouquet with a florist should be around $75 depending on what their upcharge is.

If I were you, I'd get another quote if they are telling you roses are a more expensive flower.

  • Thanks ladies, thats good to know, i'm gonna look into it some more.  I have this florist booked already, I was worried about getting our date booked because its poplular around this area but I just may look around and see what others would quote what i'm looking for.  Thanks again!

  • Much agreed with all the other ladies, Roses, should be afforadable, I HAD started out loving Orchids...HAHAHAH!!  Till I started getting pricing...think budget almost had a heart attack!!  But the florist and I designed something I LOVED for much less!!  Good Luck, Im sure you will do fine, and get just what you want  :)

  • I was just thinking about how my florist told me the orchids that I like are so expensive. I didn't even know what was what. I just kept pointing out colors or flowers in the pictures that I liked.

Agree with PPs to look into it further.

  • I would talk to another florist before going any further with your current one. When I met with my florist she said roses were a much cheaper alternative to other flowers such as peonies or orchids.

  • PPs are right, though, that it can vary a lot by region, so definitely check with other local vendors in the area. They may all say the same thing about roses. I can't say my rose geography is all that good. ;)

  • I picked roses also!  I'm not from your area though and I don't know the price breakdown for each flower (all I know is I'm using 100% roses and the price quote fit my budget!).  My florist reminded me that it's ok if I picked large, more expensive flowers because I wouldn't need as many to fill a bouquet.

Are you sure that you want to go with red roses?  In most of the red rose bouquet pictures I looked at, they tend to dominate the portrait (i.e. all you see is a red bouquet, and it detracts from everyone's faces).  I think they  would be beautiful against dark bridesmaid's dresses but I would recommend avoiding them for your bridal bouquet.  I'm going with hot pink roses for my BMs and white roses for me, and my florist is adding small white spray roses with hot pink tips into all the bouquets to add a bit of texture (and add some color to my bouquet so it's not solid white).  Maybe it would be cheaper if you chose red spray roses as an accent and chose the main color to be something not as bright.

  • We are having a Red Rose Theme in our wedding so I chose to use them for my bouquet, and they have a special meaning that goes back to the day we started dating.  I did look around today at another place and asked questions and the florist told me pretty much what all of you ladies had said, so thankyou again for the heads up on that!
