Reserving blocks of hotel rooms? Be careful!

My fiancé and I checked out 3 different hotels this weekend with the intention of choosing one to reserve a block of 20 rooms for our guests. At each, we were told our guests would get a cheaper rate if they booked a room in our block. Just to check, I looked up the prices of all the hotels on our wedding weekend on kayak.com, and at one of the hotels, a standard room was $15 CHEAPER on the hotel's own web site than it would be in our block of rooms. I'm going to talk to their group sales person tomorrow to try to get the cheaper rate, but if they won't give it to me, I'm going to go with another hotel. I just wanted to warn you guys since this happened at a national chain hotel (Sheraton). I don't appreciate my guests being ripped off, and I'm sure you don't either!

  • Thanks for the advice! So far I've only successfully blocked rooms at the resort our wedding will be in and the price I got is cheapest I've seen between several websites...I wanted to block rooms at other less expensive hotels too.

  • Ya, that definitely sucks. Your guests shouldn't be paying more then if they booked the room on their own. Not cool.

</div><div>Most hotels will not match kayak pricing then their would be no point in having a discount site if they did ... also a lot of guests will not want to ook through websites.... Our rooms would be $10 cheaper on kayak but we want everyone on the same floor same hotel. We also looked at the extras we are getting our room is free and we get a free meeting room for an after party and breakfast.</div>
  • The $15 cheaper price was from their own Sheraton web site (see my original post). I just found it by using Kayak. We're also supposed to get a free suite and can reserve an after-party room, but the value of that is much less than the nearly $400 they will make by charging our guests a higher price. I just don't appreciate being told I'm being given a deal when it's actually $15 more expensive.
