NWR-anyone else finding it hard NOT to shop?

I love clothes and shoes and bags.  For me, fall has always been synonymous with new clothes (back to school as a kid, plus my birthday!) and I usually treat myself to a few, or several, new items of clothing.  I've never thought twice about it because I'm an adult, I have a job and am allowed to buy myself thing.  BUT lately I've been feeling guilty every time I spend money becuase we are saving for a house and all the stuff that comes with home ownership.  I'm actually finding it soooo hard not to swing by the mall on lunch or after work, considering how i am literally 30 seconds away from the mall.

uuugh, any one else having a smiliar problem?

  • Yup. With all the fall things coming out it's hard not to go a bit crazy.

  • I've been avoiding the mall...I'm on a major spending freeze LOL!

Although I have a conference coming up in 2 weeks and would love some new business casual clothes...I might have to make an exception to the spending freeze : /  Maybe I'll just go shopping in my own closet first ; )

  • I try rationalizing it like "I need a black pencil skirt/red cardigan/brown wedges/that awesome purse becuase I don't have it yet" but i never actually need one.
  • Whenever I feel this way, and it's often, I always do a closet clean first and donate the "gently worn" clothes to charity. That way, if I do buy a few new things, I won't be adding to the "clutter." I, too, am on a "spending freeze" mostly because of the last minute wedding-related expenses. I am finding it so hard but just keep telling myself that the clothes will be there after Oct 6 and I'll be free to buy buy buy.

Maybe to cure it, you can set a limit for yourself ($100) and then once that's gone, that's it. Or you could just plant a money tree in your yard :) How badly do I wish those actually existed???

  • I am totally guilty. Just bought 2 sweaters, a dress and pants for work from Limited. But they were having a HUGE sale (60% off and free shipping), so I didn't actually spend that much. But with final wedding payments coming up, I probably should've skipped it, no matter how good the sale was!
  • We closed on our house last fall, and once things calmed down FI proposed.  So between house expense and wedding, I haven't bought myself anything in a long time.  Most of my pants are held together with safety pins.  Our A/C was broken this summer and we had to wait 3 weeks for the warranty company to get in gear and replace the dang thing.  I was so hot I had to break down and buy some dresses.  I felt guilty but it was like 90 degrees, I had no A/C and I wanted to feel a breeze, so I got dresses!  I can't wait until after the wedding to buy some new clothes!!

  • i purge my closet when i'm in a bad mood/frustrated/annnoyed etc...which seems to be often!  i am trying sooo hard to limit my spending!
  • Just say it is part of your trousseau!
  • I can usually prevent myself from shopping by going through my head "How many of hours does it take to purchase his item and if I purchase it is it worth those hours of work or could it be spent elsewhere?" This always works for spending money on myself but when it comes to buying things for FI and DS I fall short especially now that all the fall clothes are out and neither of them get clothes unless I buy them so I really have to remind myself they have fall clothes and I need to save not spend.

hahaha!  I've already said that to my self when I buy lingerie!
  • This is my first August in 18 years that I'm not going back to school so it's so hard for me to accept that I don't *NEED* to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe.  I'm going to have to buy myself a few new outfits because I've lost so much weight.  But I need to remind myself that now that I don't have to go to campus every day, I don't need tons a new clothes.  I'm a homebody and don't go out too much and wear a uniform to work, so a couple of new peices is enough.

LOL I've been saying that to myself ever since I showed my mom a slinky dress I bought and she said, "Bring it on your honeymoon! It can be part of your trousseau." I asked her when she's giving FI his dowry. I'm a smartass.

I normally don't buy a lot of clothes, but I am determined to look cute on our honeymoon, so I've been splurging a bit.
