October 2012 Weddings

WWYD?

So i sent out an email earlier in the week to all my BMs about their dresses, details about how to order, where to get them, etc.
One emails me back (FI's sister) saying that her husband is having his reversal surgery next month(TMI) and that she plans on getting pregnant (which she told me she might be when i asked her to be in the wedding, so I knew this, not a problem, my sister might be too, but like several weeks, not 6 months).
But in past conversations she has said she might have trouble getting pregnant bc of something with her ovaries, etc etc and might have to do IVF, but whatever...
The dresses have to be ordered by April 30th bc they take 4 months to come in, how am i supposed to pick a dress for her.
Do I:
(a) have her order the same dress as original, in a bigger size, possible with a corset back if that is an option

(b) order her a maternity dress and then if she isnt pregnant, then what???

(c) have her wait until the last possible minute to order her dress (find this out from the bridal salon), possibly have to pay rush shipping and base the type of dress she gets on her pregnancy status

Side note: FI's sister is 4'11 and already rather on the heavy side...i dont want to take the chance of option (a) and then it doesnt fit and she pays a ton in alterations

Help, feedback, anything???
she also ended her email back to me with "dont stress about the wedding planning too much!"" REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: WWYD?

  • I would say that waiting would be the worst, mostly the stress on you of having to keep track of timing, etc. but also because if you order them at the same time, they *should* all be cut from the same dyelot.  If you wait to order just hers, then the dyelot could be off and my look strange.
As far as getting pregnant, if she may have a hard time getting pregnant, then it could take her a few months anyway and it wouldn't be much of an issue.  It usually takes people a while to get pregnant, without the possible issue of something goin on with ovaries (although there are those who seem to have a problem NOT getting pregnant).
IMO, I would think having her order a dress that could be flattering on her either way IF she was noticably pregnant or not would be the best thing to do.  Order a size up from what she normally wears then you should have wiggle room if it would need to be let out OR in.  If you're doing different dresses for each girl, maybe something more fitted in the bust and less so from the waist down would be a good thing to consider, like an aline?

Good luck, I feel for you!!

  • At the stage in the game, even if she got pregnant immediately after her hubby's reversal, she still would be due in like, January, and by october while she'd be showing, it may not be that noticable- especially if she's already heavier and it's a first pregnancy.  I say order something in her normal size now, MAYBE a size bigger, and if alternations are needed, deal then.

But like IrishAngie said, it can take a while to even get pregnant.  If she doesn't get pregnant until July or August at the earliest, it won't be an issue in October.

FI and I are dealing with this now- we had been TTC, so long as I would be due before the wedding.  Now we're on a TTC break, because my dress fits 100% and I do not want to ruin it.  So the earliest we can start trying again is July- I'm slow to show with pregnancy, so it would work then.

  • dye lots not matching is something old and dated, said to make everyone order at the same time. this was true back in the day when dresses  were dyed by hand but now dye lots are done by computer and are uniform.that being said i would order the dress when you order the other girls dresses just so they all come in together and you have 1 less thing to worry about getting done. like pps said maybe order a size up?
  • thanks girls, i think ill just have her order a size up, im having them all wear the same dress, and at this point I cant stress over if she will or wont be pregnant, etc etc

    ahhhhhhhhhh!
  • I have the same situation with one of my bridesmaids who is going to try for her third baby this spring, making her possibly 4 or 5 months pregnant for the wedding.  The salon where we ordered our dresses was fabulous in helping figure out what size she should order and how the dress can be altered if she's not pregnant or not as far along.  The style of dress we picked helped too- it's an  A-Line shape and something that can be easily taken in.

My sugesstion would be to talk to your salon and maybe the seamstress there, they've probably seen everything and will know what's best to order in terms of size.  Hope this helps!!
