Wedding bands - where did you get them and how much $?

We're getting our wedding bands this weekend. Both of us just want a solid, simple band. (My e-ring is 14k white gold, so I want a really thin band to match that). FI is convinced that he can just get a sterling silver band for $50.  I want him to get a higher quality metal band that will be comfortable and look nice, and we have the budget to probably spend about $500 total for both.
Any recommendations for where to go? We'd prefer to go to a store (we're in NYC) since he doesn't know his ring size, and I'm a weird size (my e-ring is 4.75, but really loose at the base of my finger. It fits snug at the knuckle though, so I don't know what I can do).

Also, I was researching men's rings and found this great article about the different types of metals and things guys might care about for rings: http://gilletts.com.au/information.php?info_id=38

Re: Wedding bands - where did you get them and how much $?

  • i got mine wedding band as a set with my engagement ring.  We picked out FIs wedding band at Belden's Jewelers and it was around 200 dollars including the lifetime warranty.  I am not sure off the top of my head what metal it is but I know it's not sterling silver.

  • We got our from the woman who made my engagement ring.  FI got a white gold band with a hammered look and I got a thin diamond band that's a knock off of a Hearts on Fire ring I liked.  I am also a 4.75 ring size and unfortunately, you'll have to have it sized.  Usually the smallest a jeweler carries is a 5.5 or a 6.  Sizing it won't take long, but you probably won't be able to take the ring today.  I can't recommend any jewelers in NYC, but just look for something small and local.  If you actually you into Manhattan, you may have a problem today as many jewelers are Jewish and closed on Saturday for the sabbath. The diamond district (47th St and 5th Ave) is mostly closed on Saturday.
  • We spent $120 or so on both of our rings.

  • We got both of our rings at Zales.  His is Cobalt and he wanted a little bling on it so it was around $300.  I'm just going to wear my band and not e-ring so I wanted a band that was a little wider.  Mine was $350.  I don't care for the local jewelers in my area and I have bought several pieces from Zales before. They also had a good selection online, that's how I started searching months ago, so I just went with them.  It also helps that we really like the staff at our local store. lol.

Sorry the pics are so big.  lol

  • We got both of our bands at Robbins Brothers, which was where FI bought my e-ring.  FI's band was $300 or so (don't remember the exact price).  Mine was $2200.  Yeah, big price difference between the two there.

  • FI really liked a tungston band at the jeweler where we go my ring but that metal can not be resized.  He did not want to pay the $300 over and over again as he continues to lose weight so I looked online for the ring.  We found the exact same ring, minus the brand name of Triton for $99 on overstock.com...for that price we can afford to buy smaller sizes as he goes down!

  • Rings were important to us since we'll wear them all the time for the rest of our lives so we budgeted a little more on them than we originally thought we would.

We got them at a local jeweler and paid about $450 for his  (Tungsten Carbide with three small diamonds) and mine were a set at about $2000 (on sale, they were the last set like this available). Our rings are quite different but they are perfect for each of us.

We can't wait to get to start wearing them on October 6th!

  • Our first set was 50 for both won the rings and only paid shipping. But they're not our dream rings, so we're upgrading next year for our 1 yr anniversary. I actually found a different band at Kohls on sale for 10.12, originally 25. Totally fake but I really don't care. The meaning behind the ring is more important to me than the ring itself. Anyway, after using kohls cash, I only paid 12 cents for the band :

  • FI has a thing about traditional metals - we both have white gold. Mine is a set, from overstock, with small tw ( 5/8 maybe? Maybe less, I think less) his is a 6mm band from Sams club online. After shipping, mine was $478, his $330.

  • We found ours in the Asian diamond district located in Orange County (California) FI's mom has the connections so FI's ring was $360 for 18k white gold ring. It is pretty heavy and they gave us a discount on the price per gram since we also got my wedding band there. My band was $900, originally a little over $1500. My band is 14k white gold with princess cut diamonds. Without FMIL we probably would have paid a fortune but she has the hookups so we were super lucky.

  • We just got FI's band in.. a 10k white gold band with a little detail for around $400 ordered online from Zales.  I'm ordering my ring from a different local jewler, it is a 10K 3 mm white gold band with a millgrain edge to it for around $400.

With the price of gold the way it is try to find someplace that had rings in stock, they will be cheaper then anything that you have to order.  If the FH is ok with a simple silver ring, he is probably good with a simple white gold band, which you can get for cheap if you find it in stock.

Also look at 10k white gold if you need to order them, since it is more alloy then gold, it is significantly cheaper if you need to order.  Since white gold is plated anyway, it will match your 14k ring and it tends to be a little harder and more durrable then 14k or silver.  If resizing isn't an issues, look at Cobalt and carbide rings.
  • I got FI's ring from TOCARA jewlery for 35$ (silver ring that is half gold plated with a minature diamond) ..

The first E-ring he got me was from Bradford Exchange ... the two hearts one love ring, I LOVE it, but it was hard to find a matching wedding band.

so we ended up getting a set from the eunique collection at Zellers... it is a 1400$ set and we paid 495$ for them... (e-ring and wedding band for me)

    I love them :D
  • His band was $500 from helzbergs. I have two and one came from Kays I think and the other from Helzbergs they were $700 a piece

  • I got our wedding rings from India....his is 18K size 13 for $1300 and mine is an eternity band with oval diamonds for $2500.

  • My FI band is a custom 14K white gold w/an 18K yellow gold line through the center, lined on the inside of the ring with 14K yellow gold.  We spent $2600 on his but got mine for free w/a buy one get one sale at the jewelers.

As for what your FI should get, it depends on what he wants.  The new age metals (tungsten, cobalt, etc) cannot be reworked if he were ever to gain or lose weight.  Gold, platinum and silver can always be resized.  So for example, my brother lost 30 lbs and ended up having to buy a new band.  My FI and I decided that we did not want to upgrade later and that we just wanted to wear what we were married in for life, so hence his band being what he wanted now and pricier than others.
