What do I look for?

Fiance and I have a consultation with a photographer this Friday and we're really excited. We spoke to him on the phone and asked a bunch of questions and of course I have a bunch more that I have already written down but my question is this to the ladies that have already seen one and have booked already. What exactly am I looking for when I view his work? Is it a gut feeling as to me liking his work? I really appreciate any and all feedback.

Re: What do I look for?

  • Who are you meeting with?  I have met with a few in the Philadelphia area as well.

  • When we went we really just asked about all that was included in his price and a lot of things like that. What really made or decision was just a gut feeling. He made us reall comfortable, wasn't Pushy, and we just liked his style. .. Hope that helps!!

  • Personally I am more a lover of the candid shots over the posed ones. Our photographer had albums for us to look at and I perused the formal posed pictures but I went straight to the ceremony and reception photos. Loved them, loved his attitde and his prices!

  • Make sure you see the pictures from a whole wedding start to finish, not just ones pulled from a bunch of different ones.  We asked about backups if our photographer couldn't make it to the wedding.  Prices and package options are good questions, we were able to play with them a little and get a discount as well as a free engagement session because we mentioned my cousin is using her too a few months before us.  Most of all for us was gut feeling, I met 4 or 5 in person and immediately clicked with the one we chose.  She understood the vision we had for our pictures and started coming up with ideas for fun shots.
  • When we looked for ours, we looked at overall style. FI and I are pretty traditional so we didn't want anything to artsy or trendy. Like PP said, there's a gut feeling that we got. Overall professionalism, she showed us all the shots from one of her weddings. I think there's a level of comfort that we were looking for. If you're not comfortable with the photographer, it can make for a rough day.

  • Look at an album for a wedding, start to finish. Be weary if they only show a "Best Of" slideshow. Look for what's imporant to you. Candids, posed, or a mix of both? Are the pictures too traditional or artsy for you taste? Are they familiar with your venues? If not, are they willing to scope them out before hand? I asked potential photogs and videogs to describe their style. I LOVED when my photog siad she's eccelctic and selective. She takes all kinds of shots but waits for the right moment instead of getting snap happy. Also consider their personality. If you and FI are laid back, a pushy photog could ruin the mood of the day. Your photog will be with you ALL day, so make sure it's someone you can get along with.
