2012 Taxes

How do you plan to file? Its my understanding that because for more then half the year we where "single" we have the option to go either way. .....

Re: 2012 Taxes

  • I voted other, because I will probably run the numbers both ways this year and see which way it comes out better....

  • We get our taxes done by someone, and will most likely file married joint, but I'm sure she will run it a few ways to make sure that's the best.  I know we played around with the who claims the house last year and found me claiming it 100% gave us triple the return.

  • Not sure...I agree with PPs that we'll probably figure out what get's us the best refund, and that's how we'll file

  • I'm not a CPA, but I just did a quick search on this.  According to TurboTax, if you are married for any portion of the year, even one day, you must file as being married.  Here is what the site says:

"If you do face a marriage penalty, you can't get around it by continuing to file as a single person. That's because if you're legally married on December 31, you're considered married for the full year and you must therefore file as either married filing jointly or married filing separately."

  • We'll find out what works best when the time comes...I usual file through HR Block online and he files locally so we'll have to decide the channel we'll file through first.

  • Yeah, you have to file married no matter what. :(  Your status 12/31 governs your filing status.

In Canada we don't have joint filing, so not an issue there. We will file as married since he will be able to claim me as a dependent as I am a fulltime student.

  • I'm in Canada too. I will file as a "married" person instead of single.

  • FI's mom has a tax guy who does all their taxes, so I imagine mine will go to this guy to do also. I feel weird about it though. Mom always did theirs and I've done the Turbo Tax online since I've been on my own. I may fill out the forms and stuff just not actually file and let the tax guy do it just to see the difference.

  • I will run scenarios for both Married filing separately and Married filing Jointly. I have a feeling we will do separate, but we will see.

I will run both. With my fiance being self employed we might have to do joint. We are having a baby in December so we will hopefully get to claim him as well to help us out.

  • I'm a CPA.  PP is correct.  If you are considered married as of the end of the tax year (12/31), you MUST file as married.  You don't have to file as married filing jointly...you can file as married filing separately but you cannot file as single or head of household.  I think there are some special circumstances where you could file HOH if you're married...but I think it's usually when you and your spouse are considered separated but not legally divorced.

Can't speak to how it works in Canada.

  • We are filing married filing jointly. I didn't think that you were allowed to file as single if you are married as of 12/31. For those that plan on filing married filing separately, I did that and I got royally screwed as I am sure that my XH did. My advice is talk to a tax advisor.
