engagement pictures vendor suggestions

Hi I am new to the DC board as I am getting married in Orlando. However my FI and myself live in Alexandria/DC area.  We got engaged 4/22 and are probably having an engagement party in august or early september.  When would you ladies suggest we get our engagement photos done?  As we are also paying for the wedding ourselves any suggestions on good photographers with inexpensive packages?

Hi-
We just went up to MD to get some family portraits taken at UMCP.  I'm originally from the area now in  Richmond, VA.  We used James Woo  (www.jameswoophotography.com).  We liked his style and thought his packages were reasonable.

thanks I did see your original post about this. Any other suggestions we love DC and Alexandria and think they would be beautiful for our pictures.

Our photographer was Ethan Yang.  He originally suggested Old Town, but we ended up in Georgetown.  PIB.  Not sure how much he charges for just e-pics, but his wedding prices are pretty reasonable.

thanks MSSJF I am not really sure how much because not really sure how much they charge, kinda need help with seeing the average cost.  We aren't having our wedding in DC so we just want to do our engagement photos here.

Has anyone not done engagement photos? Are they really necessary and besides cool save the dates or engagement party invites what else do you use them with?

My fiance and I are in our 20s just starting in  new jobs and paying for this wedding mostly ourselves. So this limits our budget.

I was in the same situation as you (getting married back home but wanted DC engagement pictures) so I used Joe Shymanski, he is one of the photographers who also sells photos at Eastern Market on the weekend.  He was about $350 for a session, and you get a CD of all the images in color and black and white.  His website is www.joeshymanski.com.  He took fun pictures of us in front of the monuments.
