What steps to take to change name in VA?

I've actually been married for 3 years and need to change my name.  Can someone provide me with some info on the steps I need to take to do this?

The first place to go is the Social Security office.  You can look on their website to find the closest office to you.  You cannot make an appointment for this service, so don't try.  The best time to get in and out is middle of the week/middle of the month if possible.  I went first thing in the morning and was first in line and was done in less than 10 minutes.  Take your marriage license, ID, and old card if you have it.

From there, take the form they gave you and go to DMV.  You can print the driver's license application out from their website.  it costs $10.  If you have any cars titled in your name, you should get those changed too.  DMV will mail you your new license, its their new process and it is a pain, but it comes in like a week.

After that its a matter of visiting your bank, calling your credit cards, calling utilities, insurances (car, health, life)  and anything else that has your name on it.  Don't forget to change your beneficiaries if you have any.  Some places will require you to fax them your marriage certificate, others will just change it over the phone.   If you have a passport you need to update that too.  For the first couple weeks I just kept a copy of our marriage license in my purse in case I needed it.

Then as soon as you think you have everything done, about a week after that, you will remember something else :-)

    Good luck!

You should also take your birth certificate with you to social security and dmv.
