Use an IPOD as your DJ? How'd it go? I'd like to know!

So, we are paying for the wedding ourselves, so we are trying to cut money any way we can.

Having trouble finding a DJ for cheap, so we were thinking about having an IPOD and another Mp3 player(as a back up) loaded with a ton of songs, and my coworker offered to bring his PA system there. Even had a mic with it and he would control the ipod and go from there. But he didn't want to do any "mc'ing" duties. So was thinking maybe having the person who is marrying us (a friend of ours) do the MC part of it, which is to annouce what is happening next, introduce toasts, etc.

We are having a 'cocktail' reception only. Outside under a tent on the lawn. No official dance floor. (But people can dance if they want to) afternoon ceremony on the beach and then reception from 1:30-4:30 with appetizers, drinks and cake.

Did anyone use an ipod setup for their wedding?  How did it go? And advice for or against it??? Any lesson's learned?

Thanks!!!

We used an iPod for our reception and it worked great - for our environment. We knew we weren't going to have a lot of dancing and wanted a laid back feel. We didn't really have "announcements" either, but our reception was only 50 people and it worked. One of my bffs, who acted as my DOC, made any necessary announcements (bar is open, food is served, etc).

We had some dancing but it was minimal. Our music was background noise for mingling, which worked out perfect.

We are using an iPod and enlisted his younger brother's friend (who we also know, but not close enough to be a guest) to be our MC.  He's a super-outgoing, fun person, who loves to DJ, so it was perfect.  We're creating separate play lists for dinner, dancing, etc, and picking out the songs for our special events.  We'll give him a script of sort, but otherwise, we're just happy to not be paying money for a DJ!

I've seen it go both ways, I went to a wedding that had an ipod for the DJ and people danced the first song and no one got back on the dance floor the rest of the night.  I think they just didn't know the crowd well and picked the wrong music.  The other one worked out great and the dance floor was full the whole night!  I think you just need to really plan out the music to go with the crowd.  Good luck!

I've seen an iPod reception  that didn't turn out too well. iPod crashed a couple times, and there were sound system problems -- constant high-pitched feedback. Plus the music simply did not match the crowd and no one danced. I'd recommend going with a cheap DJ over over an iPod.
