Changing your name

I live in Virginia however I am getting married in DC. When I go to change my name will I have to do to the SSA in DC? I am not even really sure how the process works. I feel like I read something that said you should start doing it before the wedding, is that even possible without a marriage cert??

I think it's harder without a marriage license.  You should be able to change your name with an out-of-state marriage license, but you might want to call SSA to be sure.

You would take the marriage certificate to the SSA office in VA (your state of residence) first, get that changed and then use that to change the others - driver's license, etc.

I'm doing the same thing (although possibly moving out of state) and I've looked into it since it won't be VA or MD (after getting married in DC) and a valid marriage certificate from anywhere is fine.
