I missed my chance to WTF yesterday

i missed the WTF thread due to lots of things that I need to WTF about....

1. the seller of our home is being the largest biscuit that he has ever been!!! he threatened to cancel our contract because our realtor wouldn't send him a copy of our bank appraisal (which we paid for and is none of his business). He said he wanted to see it so he could argue that because we got the house for lower than its appraised value, that we had extra $$ left over to take care of repairs. He is refusing to fix anthing from inspections - the only thing we really care about is radon mitigation.  Our radon is a 12....anything over a 4 is high.  He wrote in bold rude letters that he is refusing to fix anything and said the radon isn't a problem bceause he has lived there 7 years and he doesn't have cancer so it's fine. UGH.

Basically he has seller's remorse and is being a maniac and rude to our realtor about it. We close on June 25th and it can't come soon enough. Except....we have to schedule painting, a meeting with our interior designer, a full deep cleaning, radon mitigation, locksmiths, roof maintenance/checkup, and god knows what else prior to our moving date of June 30th. It's going to be a horrible horrible busy week, and my parents are going to be on vacay the entire time so they can't help with anything!

2. my work computer has a virus. It is currently working but our IT man said it is on the brink of death. Awful and annoying. This is why I have been MIA the past few days - I can't do much with my computer and it sucks.

3. My purse and all its contents are still gone. It still upsets me.

4. I woke up dizzy this morning. I couldn't even stand up straight in the shower I was so dizzy - I kept bouncing off the shower walls, and I am still dizzy and having trouble seeing straight.

It's amazing how much better you feel after venting!!! WHEW!

Re: I missed my chance to WTF yesterday

  • Awww I was wondering where you were yesterday and I'm sorry it was more stress that kept you away. This seller does sound like a complete a$$. His response about the radon and not having cancer is one of the most idoitic things I have heard in my entire life.

Sorry girl - I hope things start getting better for you soon!!

  • Sorry butterfly, I hope things start looking up for you. Sounds like your seller is being a real d*ck. I agree that he probably has seller's remorse.

As for the dizziness..sounds like it could be vertigo? Do you feel off-balance?

  • Butterfly, I"m so sorry for all that you are going through. That is way more than any bride should have to deal with this close to their wedding.

Regarding the seller, wouldn't the bank giving you a mortgage require the seller to fix the radon issue before they agree to give you the mortgage, to protect themselves? Perhaps you could get the bank on your side about it. The seller may not have cancer now, but he might in the future because of it. This seller is a piece of work. He sounds like a burnt biscuit!!!!

  • Oh no, I"m sorry about all of that ): I still can't believe that incident with your purse. It's horrible.

I feel you on the seller frustration. We're closing on the 29th and have a radon problem also. Our radon is only 4.6, but we still have to fix it and the seller refuses to as well because he said we got it for a great price. So frustrating. And my parents are going to be on vacation the week we move in as well! It's very overwhelming ):

  • amanda - NO WAY! We are absolutely in the same boat right now. Radon is such an annoying problem, isn't it? The whole situation, as you said, is just extremely overhwelming. Especially since we are both planning a wedding that is happening imminently!!! ahhhh!!! I am pretty sure our seller is regretting our contract. We got the house for $50K below his original asking price, and for awhile, he actually he the home listed for $190k higher than what we bought it for (no joke). We have an amazingly talented realtor who did some killer negotiations with the delusional seller but it's almost been like he has been trying to get us to walk away from the deal.

pillsbury - my mom gets vertigo all the time and I think that is what is happening to me!! sometimes when she is reallllly stressed she just feels dizzy for no reason. I wonder if its genetic!! I am kind of starting to get nauseous from all the spinniness!
  • OMG! Will the seller cancel the contract? Are you going to show him the appraisal?? I FEEL you, seriously. I feel like rude people shouldn't even bother selling their houses!! I hate rude people.

Are you going to be okay with your dizziness? Are you still going to work today? House buying process is sooooo stressfull, especially in the midst of wedding planning. I felt like I was dying during the time. Take care of yourself, please!

Wow we really are in the same boat! We got it at $40k below asking price and he had the house listed at $125k more last year as well. That's why we're having these issues with the seller. He refuses to fix anything. There's even a window that has a crack in it that has to be replaced but he won't do it. It's just so frustrating. At this point, I"m just so fed up I don't even care. We'll fix the issues when we move in--I just want it to come already!</p>

  • mekiakoo - he doesn't have any grounds to cancel, at this point. Since there were major defects (the radon being at a seriously cancerous level) WE could cancel, but he really can't. We are NOT giving him the appraisal, it's none of his business!!! As you know the appraisal doesn't really mean anything, except for whether or not the bank will finance your entire contract price.

I am hoping the vertigo goes away - I am at work right now but typing/reading is kind of making me more dizzy!! if it doesn't go away I will probably head home at lunchtime :(

Oh yeah us too!! The house was listed at $235k last year and we got it at $55k less than last year's asking price. $10k less than the current asking price. I'm SO glad we didn't start looking last year or we would have passed up this house.

Good. Screw him- do whatever you guys want. Kick him out the door on your way in when you move in.

Be sure to change your locks immediately. Seriously, I felt 100% better once we did that because the sellers were a nightmare and we did NOT trust them. We had them changed within 30 minutes of closing.

ETA: I sure hope you feel better. Have you eaten anything?

ahhhhhhhhhhh this is crazy!! hahaha!!! we have a broken sliding glass door that he won't fix either. He's basically like "you guys got a good deal so you should have money to spare to fix this sh**t but the house is perfect in my eyes." SO ANNOYING. Did your sellers build the home themselves? Our home was custom built by the seller in 2005 so it's basically his baby, and when we point out things wrong with it (such as the radon) it's like he is taking it personally. Fiance and I are the same way - we are like SCREW the minor defects, we just want to MOVE IN ALREADY! The only good thing is that we will hopefully have wedding gift $$ that will help us with dealing with all the house stuff (not to sound greedy or sickening, I don't expect anything from anyone, but we have lots of nice family and friends who I am sure will gift us money and it will come in very handy!)

Butting in here again, our sellers also built the house. Custom built, whoo hoo. I think that's why they were so hissy about the entire thing. But I mean seriously, they left the house half unfinished. People take it more personally if they built it on their own.

    Those are the scary ones.

Hey- our house was also built in 2005. Are you sure you're not dealing with the SAME sellers as we did?!?!?!?!

  • Definitely take the afternoon off and you are still feeling like this. You have to take care of yourself first and foremost!

  • mekiakoo - our sellers sound very similar to each other, except our house luckily is totally finished.  Have I mentioned that the sellers let their dogs pee on the floor in the basement? sick. I can't wait for our cleaning lady to do a thorough, thorough, scrub down. EW.

We are definitely hiring a locksmith, but I hadn't thought of doing it immediately...it definitely is a smart idea to have them come the same day of closing!!! I am going to look into scheduling them right now!!

oh, and YAY for getting good deals on houses despite having rude and awful sellers.
  • Yes they built it themselves in 2010! I feel great that we got such a great deal but it still sucks that he won't fix anything, esp. the radon because that is such a health risk. And you are totally not greedy for thinking of the wedding money--FI and I were thinking the same thing haha

And we didn't even think of changing the locks so thanks for bringing it up (: That sounds like a really good idea.

  • What? Please tell me there is no carpet in the basement. GROSS!!!

Our sellers also had a dog who lived in the garage (poor thing) and there was one corner that reeked so bad- it smelled like PEE. You could see the moisture had seeped all the way to maybe 1/2 of way up the wall. I was gagging when I smelled it. We asked the sellers about it- they said that it was just from snow that got stuck on their garage door and when they opened the door, all the snow fell into that corner.

Liars. We took down the wall and AHHH!!! PEE, PEE, PEE!! I totally bet their dog used that corner to do her business since she LIVED in the garage. I almost died from the smell.

  • Omg I'm so sorry you are going through all of this. I agree with pps that your dizziness might be due to the stress. One of my friends gets dizzy and vertigo symptoms when her blood pressure is sky high, maybe you have the same issue. I would definitely have your broker working to get the radon fixed in the house. This seller sounds like a piece of work.

    Anniversary
  • I give you credit for still wanting to buy the house from that seller.  If someone was being that difficult with me I would probably walk away from the house.

  • That really sucks that the seller is being a word that TK will not let me type lol.  I really hope you start feeling better soon.  If it is a vertigo spell, do you have any antivert? That stuff works miracles on my vertigo spells.
