Dress Shopping - Davids v Impression in Kennesaw

Just wanted to give my feedback on David’s Bridal v Impression Bridal in Kennesaw.  My biggest piece of advice is to calm down and enjoy the experience.  This was really my first big wedding related event and I was worried about being overwhelmed.  I went in with a wall up and I knew I should have enjoyed it more…I have learned my lesson and all my other vendor meetings have been going well since then!

I went to David’s on Friday afternoon (3/16), because I heard they were really busy on the weekends.  When I arrived for my 1pm appointment they were running 30 mins behind.  Their excuse was that everyone showed up for their appointments, and David’s intentionally double books because they don’t expect people to show up, a pretty horrible excuse.  By the time we picked out a few bridesmaids dresses for my sister to try and the 3 dresses for me to try, they had a room ready.  I was a little annoyed that they only had room, since I told them both at the initial booking and the confirmation that my sister would be there to try on dresses too.  My consultant was really wonderful, supportive, and creative - she was just too busy.  I ended up trying on 4 or 5, and they were all beautiful, and my mother loved one of them, but I was having a hard time comparing the dresses as they were all beautiful.  I wanted a tea length dress for the bridesmaids and they only had 2 styles which were horrible.

Then we went across the street to Impressions.  The place was dead; we were the only customers there.  I tried on another 3 or 4, and while pretty they didn’t wow.  They were more expensive than the David’s dresses and they didn’t have the foundation garments for you to try on with the dresses.  They kept trying to impress me with designer names; I don’t care who made the dress, I just care what it looks like on me.  However, they did have a ton of sophisticated, wearable, and re-wearable bridesmaids dresses and we ended up picking one of them.  We were told it would take 3-4 months to order.

We ended up going back to David’s and I tried the very first dress on again.  It was the one my mother loved and putting it back on after the others, it gave me tingles.  My mother went out to the car and grabbed her veil from her wedding 30 yrs ago (that I will be using as my something old) and when the lace on the veil matched the dress, I knew it was meant to be.  It was an amazing deal, we ended up getting a brand new dress ordered for 50% off, so I actually got a dress $300 over budget for $100 under budget.  I was told the dress would take a month to order, but it only took 2 weeks.

  • Congrats on getting your dress! What did you end up picking? You should post pics. We love pics on the board! Or at least a link from the David's website.

I've personally never had a bad experience at david's (from going with friends) but I have heard it's hit or miss. Especially on the weekends. I totally understand it when you go to a huge big box store on the weekends, but it's still totally frustrating when you show up to your appointment and they are running way behind. That's lame. But you got your dress in the end and that's all that counts! And bridesmaids dresses too!
  • I actually had a really wonderful experience at the DB in Kennesaw. I think that you would have had a less busy afternoon on a middle of the week day - rather than a Friday. I was fortunate enough to be able to go in on a Tuesday. I had my appointment and was early but still seen immediately. The consultant was sweet and knowledgeable and very lovely. I ended up running over my appointment time so she did have to start helping another bride - but she never rushed me or pressured me into anything. I don't know how that affected the other bride's experience - perhaps she was unhappy because she had to wait? If so I feel bad for contributing to DBs bad rep.

Anyways, my experience was great and I am very happy that I purchased from them. I got my dress for a great price and was treated very well.

Like DaniKA said, I think it just varies store to store. The Kennesaw location seems to only hire good employees.

  • I got my dress from DB in Kennesaw too and it was a little bit of a nightmare when I got it but it came in fast and looks great!

    Congrats on finding a dress!
  • It's a ballgown type dress with a nice long train.  I'm having a pretty formal, traditional Catholic church wedding, so I think it will look beautiful.  Here are some pics as requested, but my little sister is a pretty bad photographer.

Those who bought dresses at David's, did you have them do your alterations as well?

  • Aww, you look great in the dress. I love that train. I'm a sucker for a long train and I think it'll fit in perfectly with the wedding you described. Congrats again!
  • I actually was in my cousin's wedding a year ago. She got her dress and we got our dresses from the David's in Morrow (where I also just bought MY wedding dress and BM's dresses) and we had them do our alterations. JUST MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE PLENTY OF TIME FOR CORRECTIONS. I had them alter my BM dress and it was made too small in the bust. I looked like Madonna...pointy boobs and all, but they fixed it. I just got a quote on my alterations for my wedding dress. For a corset back, french bustle, and taking in the bust a tiny bit, it's going to be about $300. But I will say, they aim to please, and when they were wrong, they fixed it ASAP.
  • I got my dress from Davids and I love love love it. HOWEVER, do NOT get your alterations there. They charge way more than a local seamstress will. I got my dress hemmed about 3" and bustled for $100 with a local woman. David's would have charged a lot more than that from what I've heard. I did have an awesome experience at DB on Barrett. My consultant was so nice and when my MOH and I came in a couple months later to find her dress the consultant remembered us (we didn't make an appointment).

  • David's has beautiful dresses, but the madhouse experience on weekends can be a deal-breaker. I'd never go there on the weekend, for any reason. You're likely to get temp help on weekends to assist you, while during the week, it's more likely staffed with full time employees. I've heard some horror stories about "Weekend at David's".

Here's another warning: Don't fall for the David's line about MW having exclusive color coordination with David's dresses. It's just not true, because (as we found out)  there's no such thing as an "exclusive color". There are better local places, and much less expensive, than MW. Just do an online search.
