Engagement party: gift or no gift?

I have an engagement party to attend this weekend and I have read mixed things about whether or not a gift should be purchased. The invitation doesnt say anything about a gift, but that doens't "supposedly" mean anything.
Looking for some thoughts on the whole thing. You ladies can be so helpful :) TIA!

I wonder if Prince William and Kate are registered at Target?

I would bring a bottle of wine or champagne for the couple.  Champagne is festive!

I went to 2 e-parties this year and we brought a bottle of wine to each.

Ditto the bottle of wine, or you could bring one of those edible arrangement sort of things. How well do you know the couple? If they're good friends and you know she's not already subscribed to a bridal magazine, maybe you could pay for a year's subscription? I think any cute wedding planning related gifts would be okay as well: his/hers voodoo dolls for when things get stressful, wedding planning journal/binder, or even a big bag of dove chocolate with a little note that says something to the effect of "Use in case of emergency" or something. I don't think you have to give a gift at the shower, and certainly no one will be offended if you do bring a gift (well, except anyone that doesn't because you'll make them look bad LOL ). I always figure, when in doubt - bring a gift!

I think wine is a good bet (unless they don't drink). We received mostly wine at our engagement party, and that's probably what I would bring when invited to one.

I would say bottle of wine or something wedding relalted...We hosted our own cook out for our wedding party so that everyone could get to know everyone and my bridesmaids brought us a wedding picture frame. We weren't expecting anything and certainly didn't think it was an e-party for us, but the thought was very sweet!

I'm totally on board with all of the above with the wine.  We didn't really have a party  but my brother gave us a bottle of wine and a gift card to our favorite resturant. He wanted FI and me to have a nice evening out together to celebrate, just the two of us.
