Vacuum?

My FI and I are registering for a vacuum.  We are registered at Kohl's and Target.  What would you all suggest is the best vacuum?  What do you like about that vacuum?  What vacuums do you NOT suggest?  Thanks so much :)

Everyone and their brother is going to recommend a Dyson to you.

However, a Dyson doesn't work for everyone.  Not to mention that they cost an arm and a leg, and not everyone has that kind of money these days.

We went with the Shark, and really, really like it.  It was lightweight enough for me to pick up and carry- which a Dyson was not.  It pretty much does exactly what the Dyson did, when we compared it side by side.

Did we register for a Dyson?  Yes.  We actually registered for both the Shark and the Dyson, so if someone had their heart set on getting us a vacuum, they wouldn't feel like they had to put out $600 for us to love them.

Needless to say, no one got it for us.  And most of the people I have talked to in person didn't end up with theirs, either.

Just keep in mind that you may not get it for a gift- and if you can't afford it yourself, don't get your heart set on it if you don't get it as a gift.

We have a dog that sheds a ton.  I really wanted the Dyson, and honestly, after testing out other vacuums in-store and owning a number of others over the years, there was no comparison for me.  We have the Animal ball, which I can pick up easily with one hand.  It's awesome.  I got it from my mom for my shower.

We have the yellow dyson ball.  Not sure what model specifically it is.  It definitely sucks up stuff (like my hair) that our other vacuum did not.  My H loves it! They come with a warranty too.

I don't think dyson's are the be all end all of vacuums.  If you prefer another one for whatever reason (like MBR with the weight) then register for what you like.

Honestly, after selling them for 6 years, (I've sold every brand but Miele and Oreck), Dyson really does have the biggest benefits. We used to get specific vacuums returned to us because they just didn't last. Dyson might be pricey, but you can register for one that's not as pricey, and it'll still have the benefits. First off, 5 year warranty. If anything goes wrong, you can walk it in to any Sears store (Doesn't matter if you bought it there or not) and they'll send it to be repaired. Hose gets a crack? Covered. Clogged? Covered. You drop a sledge hammer on it and a piece breaks off? Covered. Seriously. Not to mention the material that they're made out of- next time you go in to a store, take the wand out and hit it against the plastic piece on the front. It's virtually indestrucible. Do you have allergies? They're certified by the National Allergy foundation or something like that. (I can't remember the name) No bags, no filters, no extra cost after it's purchased for you. (And they have a canister if you're worried about lightweight) Besides, they're not heavy, compared to Hoover, Bissell, LG & Kenmore.

This is assuming you want a bagless. If you want bags, I'm gonna say a Hoover windtunnel. But the Platinum version is really the only one worth looking at. The rest have very loose pieces, and used to get returned all the time. Canister? Kenmore is pretty good, but don't go for the top or bottom of the line. The mid line ones are actually really good- just make sure you register for one with 'quick disconnect' at the base of the handle. You'll thank me later. :) Oh, and if you're registering elsewhere, the Electrolux canisters are the same as Kenmore- they make the Kenmore vacuums.

Most of these are in the same price range- so it doesn't really matter which one you're looking at. I would HIIIGHLY recommend going in to the stores and checking to see which ones you like the best. The feel of it, weight, sturdiness, etc.

Other brands- Bissell. For people who only wanted to spend 50-150 on a vac, they give you the most bang for your buck. The LiftOff is great- it's a canister and an upright. It is heavy though. The Bissell with the vortex suction is great too- it usually ranges around 89 and has rivaling suction to a bagged Hoover. (usually 250)

Oh, and don't bother with the Dyson handvac- they've gotten terrible reviews for the battery life... it's not worth the money.

PM me if you have any more questions. I'll be more than happy to help.

We registered for the Dyson Animal Ball. My parents bought it for us for my shower gift. I finally just opened it last week and I am in love. I have a little dog who sheds a ton and it picked up fur I didnt even know was embedded in the carpet. As a test, I vacuumed before using the Dyson and I had to empty it several times. It was quite disgusting -- so it really does have good suction. For me, it is not heavy. I was able to carry it with one arm up and down the stairs, but for others I could see how it wouldn't be the lightest vacuum in the world.

I disagree with the $600 comment -- you can get them much cheaper than that. The one we registered for at Target was $549 but when my mom bought it, it was on sale for $400ish. I've seen them on sale a lot this year too. Plus, the Animal is one of the more expensive ones.

Plus, I love that its bagless and you do not need to buy any filters or anything ever. It's all washable.

My mom just got the dyson ball (orange) for her birthday and she loves it. It is also very light weight and I am pretty sure was 300 not 600, although I am not sure if my dad got it on sale.

I have a Dyson and I love it. It's not a ball it's the model right before they came out with the ball. It picks up sooo much. Two downsides, the extender is difficult to use in areas that are in close proximity but you're supposed to use it for stairs and stuff so it makes the stairs a PITA. Also, I have to clean the wheel brush every few times I use it because my hair gets wrapped up into it. This problem is probably the same for every vacuum because of how long my hair it. It's so long that it doesn't get sucked up it just gets wrapped around the brush.

Any time:) And seriously. That was just the tip of the iceburg. I can totally tell you so much more about them. Like, I'm not sure if you know, Northstar, but Dysons (along with most other vacuums now, except Bissells) have an automatic shut off of the beater bars. Basically, if you have long hair/dog hair/sewing room, and long stuff gets tangled around the beater bar, it prevents the brush from rotating x amt of times a minute. If it drops below a certain number, it'll shut it off to prevent it from overheating. Most people think they've broken it, but if you untangle it, and on Dyson vacs, hit the reset button, it'll start back up. Bissells & hoovers- you let it cool off. I think Shark is the same way.

Dyson also has the easiest vac to 'clean out'. On the older ones, on the back bottom, there's a piece that looks like a J. It's the worst design issue, but an easy fix. most people, over time, get so used to their vacuum having amazing suction, that they start using it as a shop vac. Longer items such as pens, pencils, etc. can get caught in this piece, causing a loss of suction. If you press the button and unhook it, you can usually just empty this piece and it's all good. :)

For serious guys, PM me with any appliance or vacuum questions. I'm game.

Mine is the DC25. I think the newest one might be DC28, but I could be wrong.

Since you have pets, the DC25 or DC28. Any that call themselves the 'animal'. It's mainly the tools, but it makes a difference.
