Follow up to Wedding Gift Question: receiving gifts before hand etiquette

We are starting to receive gifts in the mail, all from our registry so far, some wrapped, some unwrapped.  So far they are all from people who have RSVP'd yes to our wedding.  Do we send a thank you now?  I am planning on sending one to anyone who will not be in attendance at the wedding but unsure as to what I should do regarding these.

    Send a thank you now so they know that you received the gift.  Otherwise they might question whether or not it ever got delivered.

    Open it and send the thank you know. You have to open it now to make sure nothing is broken. Then send the TY so they know you've gotten it. The only exception is a shower gift from someone coming to the shower, that you should bring to the shower to open in front of everyone.

    Yes, open it and send a thank you now. Think it of this way: less thank yous to do after the wedding!!

    We got the rocking chairs from my aunt/uncle and there was  piece missing and it was a bit cracked. We were glad to catch that right now rather than waiting until after the wedding to discover the problem.

    I've only gotten one gift so far and it was from a friend I see all the time. It was a small gift, so I'm not sure whether another gift will be given at the wedding (which is 8 weeks away). I sent her an e-mail thanking her and said I would send a formal thank you card after the wedding.  Normally though, I would send a thank you card right away if you already have them.
