DH and I did a knot tying ceremony.  We took 2 pieces of climbing rope and he found these knots that we used to tie the rope pieces together.  It ended up looking like 2 hearts that were connected at the tip.  His mom put it in a shadow box for us so we have it hanging up at our place now.  It's pretty cool.  I don't have any pics of the final project right now, but there are some pics in our slideshow of us tying it.  http://lazioimages.blogspot.com/2009/08/love-katie-and-tim.html Go to the gallery view, then they're on pages 10 and 11.  HTH!

Have you thought about unity candles? There are 3 candles - two of them are lit before the ceremony representing the bride and groom. In the middle of the ceremony, each person takes their candle, and you light the middle one together. Also, do you have your dress yet? I know a wonderful lady that does alterations. She is very reasonable. Call Cathy at (719) 433-4877.

Ravenbrook  ::shakes head, with a hand to forehead gesture::I've been wracking my brain about this, unfortunately I haven't thought of much. The first thing that came to my mind was melding two rock and roll love songs while you sign the marriage license. Another I've heard about has you write letters (before the ceremony, not during) to each other about what you love about the other and why you couldn't imagine your life without each other. You place both of the letters (unread) and a bottle of wine (or whiskey?!?) into a box, then nail it shut. The officiant will explain the contents, then mention that the box will remain closed unless either of you want to end the relationship, at which point you will open the box, drink the wine and read the letters.

I was at a wedding once when the officiant did a reponse-style song....I can't remember the song, but it was contemporary and fun (it fit the couple very well).  I know it sounds strange, but it played out very sweetly.  Gotta say I love Katie18's knot-tying idea!
