I know a few of us were discussing our FI/DH's changing their last names as well and wondering how the social security office, etc. would handle it. The question was whether they would simply take the marriage certificate (as they would for the wife) or if he would have to go to the courts to get his name changed. The lady at the Boulder County Clerk's office was not entirely helpful, stating only that she had no idea but good luck. We went to the Social Security office today prepared for battle, I had double copies of everything we could possibly need and my game face on. I was beyond livid that there was a chance (in this day and age!) that I would have no problem hyphenating my name but poor Ben would have to go to court to change his. I'm sorry but this is no longer the era of chattel. I am all for women taking their husbands name, men taking their wives, hyphenating, creating a new name or whatever their hearts desire. I just think the rules should be universal and not gender based. By the time we got to the counter I could feel my body tensing up. We explained to the woman what we wanted to do and she simply took the paper work, had a sign and we were on our way. She didn't even blink about my DH changing his name as well. YAY!!!! Not sure if this was just a Boulder thing or if it is universally accepted but I figured someone else may benefit from this little tidbit of knowledge.
