More name change questions....

Sorry- the last post led me to more questions.... I have had to wait a month until after our HM to change my name etc. After we get back from HM, I have a week off of work which is when I have to run all these errands b/c I am a teacher and don't have flexibnility throughout the work day to run these places. I was planning to use that week to go take care of all name change activities: SS office, DMV, HR at my work, create new bank accounts with DH, call and change my name and bank account etc. with all my creditors. Is all of this even feasible in one week? IF I go to the SS office in one day, can I even do any of these other things until I get my new SS card? Another question is that we just received our marriage license in the mail today. Do I just take this copy to the SS office (and does it matter which county I go to?) and then they mail my new card? Can I just go do this now before we leave for Mexico so it is here by the time we get back and I can go take care of all this other stuff? Do they keep a copy of your marriage license at the SS office or just look at it? Do I need my actual SS card to travel abroad or can I get a head start on that part? i.e. my HR department needs to see my new SS card in order to change my life insurance, email, etc.... Any advice as to how to do these or in what particular order in order to try to get them done by the last week in November????? Thanks!

Another question is that we just received our marriage license in the mail today. Do I just take this copy to the SS office (and does it matter which county I go to?) They will just look at it.  and then they mail my new card? They will give you a recipt saying you changed your name.  Then I took that paper to the DMV.  They looked at it and then changed my name on the drivers License.  Can I just go do this now before we leave for Mexico so it is here by the time we get back and I can go take care of all this other stuff? It takes about two weeks to get an offical drivers license back in the mail.  They only give you a paper copy of that too.  Do they keep a copy of your marriage license at the SS office or just look at it? Just look at it.  Do I need my actual SS card to travel abroad or can I get a head start on that part? Its just making sure your drivers license and your boarding pass match.

I think a week should be enough time for you to get all of that done. And no you dont need to wait until you get your SS card back, all you need is a certified copy of your marraige license to take care of everything (except for your work obviously). I did not bring my original but I brought a certified copy of my marraige license to the SS office and they did not keep it, they made a copy. Not sure if that helps or not. You can go straight from the SS office to the DMV, then banks and then from their it doesn't really matter what order. HTH!

I know it's been a while since I dealt with all of this stuff, but in 2006 you had to go to the DMV first. Then I had to wait until I got my actual driver's license (not just the little temp piece of paper) before I could get my social security card. I remember it took about a week after I went to the DL office before I was mailed my new license. Then I went to the SS office with my Marriage license and new DL. After that everything was easy. Except my retirement, I've been married 3 years now and still don't have my name changed there. Good Luck

Thanks for the help so far ladies. It sounds like the SS office/DMV order varies from place to place so I will call and check on that on Monday. So my next question (thanks for being so patient with me) - can I just use the copy of the marriage certificate they mailed me to take to all these places or do I have now have to order another certified one? Is the one they sent us not certified???? TIA

You'll probably want to check with your bank to see what they need to change your name, mine needed the certified copy of the marriage certificate as well as my new driver's license. So, I couldn't do that until I got my license back in the mail. Credit cards/etc I was able to just call or e-mail and they took care of it.
