You're not entirely wrong. That's what it used to mean. But in more recent years, it's become an internet meme of "for the win"
I've always used for "for the win." But on this other social networking website that I frequent (ravelry) we often talk in the lolcats speak. Sometimes I have to edit myself and not type that way on here.
Paprika: I like it when you burp in my ear. It really turns me on.

It's mainly used in good fun.
Think way back to Hollywood Squares. They used to choose a square "for the win", to win the game. Same concept, but you're saying for that moment, you win the game (of life/argument/situation).
It's become so mainstream now though that it's never used "right".

For example... in response to BP's great dress find... one might say "eBay FTW."
