S/O getting things on sale....

I have been lusting over these toasting flutes and server set for a little while.... and they are now on sale for 25% off! I am really thinking of getting them. I have to make my mind up!  Sale is only 3 days long.

I have toasting flutes already, but got them before I officially booked my venue so I didn't want to jinx it and get them engraved. I did not realize at the time how expensive it is when you go somewhere to do it instead of at the time of purchase. I could kick myself for even buying them in the first place...

Of course I tried looking for ones to register for and don't like anything in the stores I will register at.

What do you think?

IMHO- use the ones you already bought (unless you can sell them and make your money back). I may be the odd man out here, but FI and I decided not to get toasting flutes or a serving set. We will use champagne glasses the venue provides. I can't justify spending almost $100 for something else that is going to be used 1 time and then sit in a cabinet for years.

I thought of that, but I know I will use them often. I like to feel fancy so I would bring them out of the closet for special occasions. ;)  Hell, I might just use the flutes for no reason at all. haha. I also want them engraved. I would use the server set whenever people come over and we have cake or pie for dessert. I am going to try and sell them though. I added it to my for sale page in my bio. If I don't sell them, I will just give them to a relative when they get married. They are nice but I actually should have not bought them, I really like the bling on these new ones, and the others don't.

I do like the news one better!  (sorry- that doesnt help I'm sure haha) But I also don't think the ones you already have are that bad. Maybe you could give the old ones to someone?

We probably won't get them either unless someone gives us that stuff. And if they don't, then we'll either use whatever the venue gives us, or my mom said we could use theirs as a 'something borrowed' because they never use them

I will either try to sell them or just hold on to them for someone else that will get married.  I really like them and ever since seeing them I really want them. So I should just get them.

My mom called me a couple weeks ago and told me she still has hers. something borrowed thank you very much.

That is nice. Not many people in my family had 'weddings'. Most just went and got hitched.  My something borrowed is my veil, from my MOH

Those are pretty!  I registered for a nice serving set and toasting flutes and didn't get either. So we're probably just using what the venue provides.  However, I am still lusting after the crystal champagne flutes I wanted, so I might just buy two of them to use and then have.

I guess my venue would provide something too, I rather have my own.  I am sentimental. :)

Cara- what is the flutes you wanted?

If I could, I would register for the Swavorski ones at Macy's.. they are $400. haha! Nobody would buy them though.

I was hoping to have a nice set that we could always keep, but it just didn't work out.  So I'm okay with it.  We had wanted to register for the "ballet ribbon" china with champagne flutes.  We ended up not registering for china at all, but I held onto the flutes since we don't have any crystal or any champagne glasses.  They are expensive, but I might use a gift card and buy two we'll have and can use at the wedding.

ohhh waterford. Nice! I am not registering for china either. I don't have enough family to buy it all for me and I would never use it, not to mention store it. I live in a closet.

We didn't register for china or toasting flutes, but we did get these as an engagement gift:

    and we registered for these:

I am so glad we did because I'm also sentimental and would love to have this and our cake serving set from our wedding day.

I like the ones you chose also!

This. We felt the same way and used the venues flutes and serving set. Worked out perfectly. And free!

EDIT: I also wanted to add that I would have been very appreciative if they were gifted for our engagement or shower, but they were not. So we just did without them.</div>

This is basically us. If we were received them at the shower, that would have been great - but I'm not spending $$ on them.

Hmm.... maybe someone will get me them for the shower, but I could end up not liking them.... haha.

This is the set we were given at Christmas:

    http://www.tenthousandvillages.com/catalog/image.popup.php?product_id=9597

They cannot be engraved.  My family (and FI) are huge on fair trade items, and I saw these and lusted after them in the store.  My mom bought us a set for Christmas as a present.
If she had not, though, we would have a) used simple ones from the venue or b) borrowed them from someone (they wouldn't necessarily have to be "wedding" flutes, just nice goblets or flutes to use).  I cannot justify the cost of these (even if they aren't as much as some) when our parents are graciously paying for the wedding and are trying to save as much as possible; I would have felt very irresponsible.  But, like others mentioned, since they were a gift, we were very appreciative.  But I couldn't have spent the money myself.  We are borrowing my parents (who are now divorced, ironically, LOL) serving set.

IMO, I think you should keep what you have.  They are both pretty.  Also, I know you think you will use the stuff; I have talked to so many brides who thought that, and have never touched any of it, but more so the serving set (the goblets, especially when they aren't engraved, get used more).  You end up using a fork and knife.  Not saying you are wrong, just trying to be honest and practical with advice I have heard from many older brides.  It is your choice though; if you are going to buy the new ones, I would list the old set on the T2T boards.
  • edited December 2011
I really should have never even bought the ones I have... I just feel like these new ones are more me. I will post on TTT board and see what happens. Once I get an idea in my head I tend to not be able to get it out.

B2B - I know exactly how you feel. I bought a pair of expensive shoes that I liked, but wasn't in love with - and now I am stuck with them unless I can sell them on Ebay or something.  I should have just splurged on the pair I really loved from the beginning!
  • edited December 2011
I bought my first pair in dyeable white, so I might keep them to switch into later in the night (much more comfy I'm sure!!) and then possibly dye them black after the wedding.
  • edited December 2011
tacc- Yea I am glad the flutes were not that expensive at all. So it isn't like I am loosing that much money even if I don't sell them. I can always give them to somene too. I hope you can sell your shoes. But what's one more pair of shoes? meh. I <3 shoes! At least I am not rethinking my gown. That is the one thing I am not rethinking! Thank goodness.
