I barely have any muscle, but I do like to add some more weight after a few weeks.

I don't know which to pick.  When I do reps, I do a pyramid...so I increase the weight and then decrease on the last set.  Over time, I increase the weights overall so I'm still pushing myself as I get stronger.

I chose the first, although I tend to do 1 set with 5lb, the next with 7lbs and then if I feel up to it the 3rd set with 10lbs. I'm trying to tone my arms and not create muscle so it works. I also use the resistance bands.

For legs I kinda do with what I've got a home - especially since I don't normally do leg workouts. FI has a bowflex and sets it up for me - so I'm not sure what weight is on there - but b/c of my terrible knees I keep it at the same weight.

At the gym, I try to push myself, the last 3-4 reps in the set should be a little difficult.

If I'm doing at home dvds, I am limited to what weights I have.   But they tend to be more reps so it still gets hard at the end even with less weights.

I mostly workout at the gym so I picked 1.

Ditto TCT - I don't really do a lot of weights for legs, I mostly use body weight resistance for those. Sometimes I'll grab a weight to hold, but I rarely use weight machines for legs.

But, I also HATE with a firey passion when my legs are sore from a workout.  I don't care if I can't straighten my arm, but I absolutely hate being in pain when I walk or use stairs.  So that's why I don't really do a lot with legs.  I mostly rely on cardio to keep them in shape and avoid bulk.

I chose option 1.  If I am at home, that's not true - but at the gym my goal is to try to do more over time.

I was always taught that if you want to only tone and not build, you should only use 2 or 3 lb weights?

The 2 to 3 lbs weights weren't challenging at all. I'm only doing it 3 times a week - and honestly have been slacking a bit lately. I have seen a difference when I do keep up with it though. I do sets of 10 or 12 - and usually only 3 sets. FI's PT suggested it  - and he's definitely a PT I trust, so I didn't really question it. I'll have to ask FI about that though...

I chose option one. I increase weight as I get stronger, but to a certain point. Being 4'10, I don't want big bulging muscles cause I would look ridiculous. So on some machines, I'll set the weight to 30, but I usually don't go higher than that. I just do more reps if it gets too easy.

For the people trying to lose weight but aren't seeing results.... increase your weight!  Building muscle increases your metabolism which will help you lose weight which will make you look leaner and toned.

Thanks! You know you really should go for that PT licensing - you'd def make some good side money!

I put option 2.  I generally use 10 lb free weights at the gym and I haven't been able to go higher because i really just can't lift anymore than that...

I start out 3 lbs and work my way up over time. I have dumbells that have screw on pieces to make them heavier, it is really neat :)

I picked Option 1 but I also use my body weight. I do push ups and things like that. I actually just started the Insanity workouts a few weeks ago which uses only body weight. I am not doing the program as they say to though because I need a little more cardio and some wieghts so I am working those workoust into my other routines.

i was always afraid i was going to bulk up if i lifted heavy weights.  then my trainer explained that heavy weights burn more fat, therefore resulting in skinny arms (as long as you keep good form like MH said)!  wooot!  2-3lbs dont do jack.

I use anywhere from 3-10 pounders depending on the exercise

I'm a runner so all my muscle is in my legs- so I've been working on the arms more (thank you jackie werner work outs) and  trying to get my wimpy little arms to build up some muscle

I use my own body weight for most things, mainly because I'm still trying to build up strength from what I lost this past year after the accident. (they really suck... I don't advise ever getting in one. :p ) I asked my PT about it before I left and she told me to try weights little by little, but if it really started to hurt (as in pain, not me being a wimp) to ease off. I use 2 lbs weights when I do the 30 day shred, but I use resistance bands when I do pilates.

Once I have more strength back, I'll be pushing myself a little further every time. Say 2 lbs one week, 5 lbs the next, once that becomes kinda easy, I'll up it to 7, etc.
