July 2012 Weddings

I am a makeup idiot and have no idea what to do.

I know this should probably go in Wedding Beauty, but I feel like I'll get more responses out of you guys.

I have never really worn makeup. I might throw on some eyeshadow (solid color, no blending really) once in a while for special occasions, but with engagement pics in two days and a wedding, I need some help. My mom doesn't wear makeup so she's no help. My cousin is okay at it, but she always uses outrageous colors that she doesn't care if they get all over her eye.

I started wearing eyeliner, but because my cheekbones are higher, when I smile my eyes kind of disappear and my eyeliner smudges, making it look like I have horrible bags. I don't know if there's anything I can do about it. I use waterproof eyeliner. I just bought a new mascara to try because I don't wear it. I have a clear mascara I use to help separate my lashes, but I always wind up getting black all over the place.

I pretty much can apply foundation, because I normally have to cover up redness from acne. But I don't know about blushes or anything.

I think the only thing I'm decent at is applying lip color.

I know that you guys can't sit in my bathroom with me and teach me what to do but any pointers would be great. Also, if you know any good makeup tutorials on youtube or wherever that you could share would help a lot.

Just for reference, I have pale skin, dark brown hair, and blue eyes.

  • Honestly, I think it would be totally worth it to go to a make-up counter and have it done. If you call a MAC counter or store they'll do all of your make-up if you make a $40 (I'm pretty sure this is the price) purchase. So yeah it costs money but you also get $40 worth of make-up.

But if you don't want to go that route, I really like all of makeupbytiffanyd's tutorials on youtube. This one is really pretty and thorough. It has two parts.

  • I second Meagan. I would try to go to a mall (you're in Central PA - Are you close to King of Prussia?) and sit down at a makeup counter and be honest with them. If you have a Sephora, they are the best at this and they will not take your money for the application (in fact, I didn't even buy anything last time they did my makeup there). Sometimes they make you buy something and sometimes they don't.

Tell them you need some pointers and have them show you. If you do buy something from them, do not buy mascara. It's basically the same thing as the type you get in a local CVS - I use high end tinted moisturizer, bronzer/blush and lip gloss, but I buy "Lash Blast" from CVS.

Are you putting eyeliner below your eye or on the top lid? Top lid is harder to get in a straight line, but it also doesn't mess up quite as easily. If you get it close to your lashes, it has a great effect on your eyes.

Some things that I think make a world of difference: eyelash curler, mascara, bronzer/blush (on your cheekbones, just really lightly), and some lip gloss. Those are all you really need, in my opinion.

ditto on everything!!  I normally only wear eye shadow & mascara...I hate eye liner, it makes my eyes look a lot smaller...I went to the mall & had Clinique do my make-up for free (You don't have to buy anything, but I usually buy the eye shadow..to me it's worth it)...I didn't even have foundation on (it makes me break out, so I avoid it, even the hypoallergenic stuff I avoid...idk if it works or not...)  I just wore blush & got my eyes done =)
  • I am a big fan of eye liner. I usually add more emphasis on my eyes. So I have tried EVERYTHING because like your self my eyeliner smudges as well. Yell
I have been using Maybelline Gel eyeliner and it is awesome! It last all day and it is even better that the expensive brands. I also like the Maybelline falsies mascara. I hope this helped. PM if you have any other questions.
