Marriage License in NC?

Hi Ladies,

I am completely clueless about the actuall marriage licensing process in NC.

So basically, we're getting married May 26th.  One of our best friends went online and became ordained, so he can officially "marry" us at the ceremony.  But I also looked at this site: http://www.usmarriagelaws.com/search/united_states/north_carolina/marriage_licenses/currituck_county.shtml which is a marriage licensing place on the way down.

I'm just really REALLY confused on the whole "official" process - can someone help?

Thanks,
Your clueless friend/bride,
Anna

Re: Marriage License in NC?

  • Are you on our facebook group? I think there are several documents on there explaining it, if not, I'll send some of the ladies over here to help you out.

  • Hey Anna,
So basically here's what I know about the marriage license process for getting married in OBX.

First thing you have to do is you have to visit the Register of Deeds office in Manteo. Here's the link to their website: http://www.darenc.com/depts/Deeds/index.htm

From Kill Devil Hills, it's only about a 10 minute drive away. You can download the "Worksheet for Preparation of Marriage Form" here on the bottom of this page: http://www.darenc.com/depts/Deeds/marriage.htm and take it in with you. Take you and your fiance's photo IDs and SS cards with you if you have them. If you can't find your SS Card, take Birth Certificates instead- those are acceptable too. The ladies in the Deeds office will approve this and give you the form which needs to be signed by your friend who is officiating your ceremony and a witness after the wedding. Then, that form has to be returned to the office within I think a week's time. You can take it back to office yourself (that's what we did), or have your officiant take it in for you. They will approve it, stamp it, file it and give you a copy to take home.

As far as who can marry you all, I would call the Deeds Office and ask them. They were SUPER helpful to us and answered all our questions. Hope this info helps you!

  • We are leaving the day after for our honeymoon.  I assume the office isn't open on Sunday.  What would you suggest we do?  Should we have a family member wait & do it?
  • Jennifer,
Yes, you can have a family member take in the form for you. I belive it can also be mailed in. I would call   (252) 475-5970 and confirm that though.

  • Sure thing, Jennifer. And Thank YOU! You inspired us to post a permanent thread regarding info on obtaining your Marriage License in NC. It can be really confusing (I know it was for me when I was planning!) so hopefully future brides will have less trouble finding the info now :)
