Black on the beach?

Hi Ladies!

I have a quick question that I am hoping all of you OBX wedding experts can help me with :)

We are getting married in Sept of 2012 on the beach in the 4x4 section of the Outer Banks. I was going to put my bridesmaids (5 of them) in black but they can choose any black dress they want. I am having tiger lillies, yellow lillies and white lillies as my flowers and I really want them to pop against the dresses! Do you think black is ok to wear on the beach or is that too formal? Thanks so much for your help! :)

    Hi Scheff!
Welcome to the board and congrats! You chose a wonderful spot for your location!

I personally think black dresses will look AMAZING against the ocean backdrop- especially with the flowers you mentioned! Just because you're on the beach, you can still be formal. I saw a wedding in Kill Devil Hills when we visited to meet with vendors and the bridal party was all in black and I thought it looked so amazing. The contrast totally "popped" like you said. I say, go for it!

Hope that helps and please ask away with anything else! Congrats again on your engagement and good luck with all your planning. This board has been a life-saver for me in my planning and finding vendors, and all the brides and grooms (yes, we have a groom on the board!) here are so helpful.

Sarah- Thank you so much for the welcome! I've been peeking at the posts the past few days just to get a feel for how this board was! Other boards (as others have mentioned) are NOT so welcoming at all.. somewhat scary actually! I'm glad I stuck with this one!

We are doing so much with color everywhere that I was thinking I would put the girls in black so they can have a really wide selection to choose from and the guys in khaki shorts and a black linen shirt. I was nervous with black in a wedding that is not a black tie event by any means. Thank you ALL for the encouragment though, I think we will stick with black!

LOVE this idea! Khaki and black look so sharp together. What colors of flowers are you thinking for the guy's boutienerres (sp?)?

Black would be nice.  The formality of the wedding is usually dictated by the time of day.  With that being said, my dress is fairly formal and FI and BM decided they wanted tuxes.

I like the black idea too Scheff.   Would you put the guys in black "dressy" flip flops too?  And yup,  I'm the "groom" that Sarah is referring to.  Welcome aboard!

Haha Philly- thank you! And yes everyone is in flip flops during the Reception and pictures but barefoot while on the beach!

And I'm not sure yet for the guys flowers, I was thinking white or yellow though since the girls will have orange, white and yellow? FI's favorite color is orange so hes wearing an orange boutonniere but he is wearing black linen shirts with either a khaki or white button down shirt so the contrast will be there.

We have not decided officially what time of day we want to get married, we both were thinking around 5 or so that we we have the sunset mixed in- A little background- Since we have been going to the OBX, FI and I have made it a point everyday to watch both the sunrise and sunset together, so having that incorporated somehow is really important. I feel like we will get a more positive response to a sunset wedding haha!

Hi and welcome!!!  Black sounds great, go for it!  I like the idea of having the girls pick their own dresses as well!

    Hi Scheff and welcome!

I think black would look great on the beach and I just love your choice of colors...they will definitely pop against the black.  Since FI is wearing an orange booty (love my abbrev? lol) the GM's would look great with yellow ones IMO.

The link below will be most helpful in finding the perfect time for you come next September:

So glad you have joined the board and we all look forward to sharing ideas and giving advice along the way.

P.S.  Stick with us obx ladies and gent...we truly are THE best ;)

Hi OBX! Thank you for the welcome :)

We are thinking of coming and having the wedding Sept 4th/5th. We go the week of Labor Day every year and love the weather we always have, (minus Hurricane Earl last year, 1st evacuation ever!).

And thank you for the encouragment with the colors, they aren't set it stone yet but it helps so much to hear feedback! Btw, I LOVE your abbreviation haha!

I think black is great.  I was struggling with the same thing because I've always wanted a white dress with some sort of black accents.  I'm not sure on my dress yet.  I can't look because I'm eight months pregnant ;)   My wedding isn't until May 2012.  I figure as long as I get my dress by December, I should be good.  My girls will wear this dress from David's Bridal though.   I think its beachy, and incorporates some black.  That way, I can put black in my wedding dress if I want to.  The girls will carry orange gerbera daisies...Also, I know EVERYONE says this, but I really think this is something they could wear again as a guest at a wedding or something.

I think bridesmaids should be able to wear something different and fun.  Especially at a beach wedding :)
