Band/ DJ??

I am a little confused as to what to do about this and could use the adive of some more expienced party planners than myself.  You definately need music to have a party right?  We are having our reception at our Rental House with I would say at most 60 guests.  We are slightly older couple and most of our guests will be in late 20- early 30's.  Do we get a DJ?  I am just scared of one of those situations where no one wants to dance and the DJ is just embarassing trying to encourage people to do so.  Is a band better?  Does anyone have any recommendations or already booked/ used someone they love?  Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Hi Delilahjz,  I think you have a few options, one is a dj, but the right one who plays your type of music, I haven't picked one yet, but have seen a lot of good recommendations on DJ Bruce among others.  You could also go with an ipod and a few different playlists to feel out the crowd and have someone in charge of manning it (a younger cousin or something?).  Bands are great, but also pricier usually.  A solo musician or duo would be cool, they would give an intimate vide and would also be able to feel out the crowd.

BTW, late 20's, early 30's is a pretty young crowd still I would say, or at least I like to think so falling into that group myself!  haha.

    Good luck!

Metrorentals (I think) has a DJ in a box where  you can program a play list out of their 20,000 or something crazy library.  Thats a good alternative and much cheaper.  We are having a pretty traditional wedding where the DJ will do the wedding party entry announcement and other announcements throughout the night.  In that way, a DJ is better for us.  Good Luck!

We splurged on a band early in our wedding planning (before I realized how much everything else was going to cost). And after we hired them I kept thinking, "why aren't we just loading songs onto an iPod instead? it would be so much cheaper."

But our band (The Deluge -- they traveled from the Greensboro area) was spectacular and from what I've read on other threads, really not much more expensive -- maybe not any more expensive -- than DJs in the Outer Banks area. They played the ceremony and reception and they really made the party. All of our guests asked about them and they kept everyone dancing even after we left the reception.

I think music is definitely important. I'm sure you can go the iPod route and have a great party, but I'm so glad we shelled out for a great band. We'll probably never have a party when we get to do that again.
