Outdoor Reception in May- too cold?

We are planning a wedding for May 19 in Duck.  Ceremony will be on the beach, reception at the rental house.  A thought just occurred to us, that it may get pretty cool at night.  I looked up weather averages and the low can be upper 50s.

Just wanted to see what other brides plan to do or have done in this situation?

Do we need to rent heaters of some sort?  Do people move around enough that being cold isn't an issue?

Thanks in advance!

  • We're getting married May 18th in KDH. Basically we're hoping for warm weather so we can have the reception on the deck, but if that doesn't come through, we're hosting the reception inside the event home (in the big living area). I think anytime you plan an outdoor event, you gotta have a back-up plan. Being on the oceanfront, the temps are generally a little cooler than if you are inland, so keep that in mind.

  • I would just make sure that you allow for some open space inside the house so that in case people do get chilly, they can come inside to warm up, but still mingle and have a great time!  I think it's pretty known that Spring weather can be off and on, especially with an oceanfront breeze like Court mentioned, and most ladies will probably bring a cardigan or wrap of some sort to keep them warm.  Besides, everyone's going to be so busy dancing, they will warm right up ;)

What about mid-late September? Are temps typically chilly in the evenings during this time of year also?
  • We were married May 5th 2012 in an outdoor ceremony and reception. We were lucky, it was not too cold at all. We did have a very large common area to move the party to for incliment weather. Like Char said, have a back up plan just in case.

It's not as chilly in the evenings in Sept as it would be in the Spring time, but it's also the tail-end of Summer and all.  However, you are on the coast and the weather can change in the blink of an eye....but that's all part of having a beach wedding :)  I wouldn't worry about it too much.

P.S.  We don't use the "H" word in these parts when it comes to Sept/Oct weddings.  There is NO such thing ;)
