January 2012 Weddings

What time of day/night?

My fiancé and i have been planning a September 2012 wedding for months. Over the weekend we stayed at a cozy little cabin and he proposed the idea of having a winter wedding and holding the reception in a log cabin, and boom, our plans changed. I couldn't be more excited! We were planning a big 400 person wedding and trying to make everyone happy but ourselves, and now were down to a 45 person guest list and not having a big dance floor but instead having our closest friends and family watching home videos and playing games!!

I have replanned almost everything except, how do you pick a good time of day? The sun is supposed to set at 5:33 so I was thinking 4:30? We are hoping not to be outside for longer than twenty minutes, but I don't want it to go super dark on us. Also there will be during at the reception and I'm worried no one will drink at 5 pm? Opinions please, thanks!

Re: What time of day/night?

  • I am thinking that this is really dependent on where you live.  Unfortunatly, I have never been to AR.  But if you time is correct, I would think 4:30 is good.

If your friends and family are like mine, they will drink at 5. Or at least after dinner.

  • Are you getting married indoors or outdoors?  Pictures before or after?

We are getting married indoors at 3:00.  Originally I had it set at 4:30 but we want the pictures after the wedding.  My photographer pointed out that if I want outdoor photos in the daylight I needed to move my time up.  We are getting married in the mountains in CO so the sun has a very short setting time before the moutains block it.

We are getting married in a lodge with 25 of our closest family and friends.  I figured they could hang out while we take pictures. In fact most of them will be in at least some of the pictures.  Then dinner is set for 5-5:30.  I know our families won't have any problems eating early since most of us live central time so that would really be 6-6:30 perfect dinner time.  Also drinking at 5 is perfectly acceptable, at least in our family.  :)

We're starting at 4pm in order to beat the sunset.

We are getting married at 4pm and doing the pictures from 2 until 4. This way the lighting doesnt effect the pictures.

I dont think you'll need to worry about people not wanting to drink at 5pm. If they drink, they drink and if they dont, they dont. I'd work the time around what works best for your ceremony.

  • I would reccomend looking up the sunset time in the farmer's almanac, ask your photographer how much time you need for pictures, ask the officiant how much time you need for the ceremony, and work back from there, building in about 5- 10 minutes of buffer.

    And welcome by the way!

    Ditto.
  • Our ceremony is at 3:30 pm so that we will have time to take pictures outside afterwards while there is still sunlight.
