Place settings for informal, non sit down dinner?

Has anyone not had a formal sit down dinner, but still had table settings?  I wasn't going to do a seat assignment, but I was still thinking people would like a space that is their's to put their things and eat their hors dorvs (sp) at.  Thoughts?  Thank you!

Hi- I am doing a station dinner for my wedding in October. The way it is going to work is that the food will be in stations all around the garden and Snyder is brining in low tables and high tables for our guests to stand or sit and eat. Stationed dinners are becoming pretty popular right now because it allows the guests to not be forced to sit down and they can mingle/wander/dance/eat, etc. So look into getting some high top tables and you should be just fine. And you don't have to have a table and seat for every guest this way.
