South Carolina-Charleston

New Knottie Here!

Hey y'all, I'm Liz - and we'll be getting married in Charleston July 4, 2014!

I know it's a little ways out, but I'm getting my ducks in a row, since we're currently long distance, both in school, and neither of us live in Charleston (yet, hopefully)!

Really just wanted to introduce myself for now, can't wait to get advice and share experiences with everyone Laughing

I've only seen pictures so far, but we are going to be there in December to visit his family and will be looking at venues then. I've somehow convinced him to visit 5 venues (actually I overestimated and asked for 6...)

    What is your venue?

  • Good luck with everything! I am an out of town bride also. I would book your venue ASAP. I booked mine 15 months out and it was booked completely by the end of the week I booked. Charleston is very popular! The Rice Mill is very cool but we ended up booking for The William Aiken House. I am 30 days away!

Yeah! I was wondering who else was on my date. All the venders I talk to say someone else has called aout my date ;)

What vendors are you using and where are you doing your rehearsal dinner?!?

We are going with the William Aiken House.  Tried to get July 4th, but had issues with getting family and friends to come.  So, we are going with July 6th which will give everyone Friday to travel.  We have most of our vendors set except for DJ and flowers. We are having our rehearsal dinner at

    Bocci's
    www.boccis.com

I'm using Chi Photography of Charleston as my photographer

    http://www.chiphotographyofcharleston.com

Dlish in Charleston. Molly is amazing and really enjoy the time going over exactly what I was looking for

    http://www.dlishdessert.com/

The Crazy Dutchman is my Caterer
    http://www.crazydutchmancatering.com

I went with Winship Productions for my day of coordinator.
    http://www.winshipproductions.com

So far that's who we've booked with so far.

  • William Aiken House looks gorgeous and I've looked at a bunch of pictures from Chi and they seem awesome! We are lucky and have a very good friend who is a wedding photographer, so he is going to do the wedding for us.

It seems like there are a lot of DJs around - Ascend Entertainment told me he was booked for the 4th next year, but may still be available. The best reviews I've seen are for Jay Maxwell - but I haven't contacted them yet.

I keep hearing great things about D'lish. If you've got a minute, could you maybe message me any info that you got from her? I keep getting strange answers when contacting vendors so early <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-embarassed.gif" border="0" alt="Embarassed" title="Embarassed" /> so anything you can tell me would be great. Everyone seems to love her!

    Thanks for sharing :)

THe William Aiken House requires you use their in house caterer(FISH which is amazing). I am not sure if you have found a way around this or just assume it would be ok. Just a heads up.
  • Molly at D'lish did my wedding cake it was amazing! She was so wonderful to work with. I would contact her soon, because she will probably begin to fill up soon.

oh no thanks for the heads up.  I was told by the day or coordinater that it was ok to go with them. Hope he didn't tell me the wrong info as I've already booked them.  I'll be on the phone this morning!!!   Thanks again and hopefully they have a way around or i'm gonna be a little unhappy to say the least!!!!  Thanks again!!

  • I hope it works out. The William Aiken House is a beautiful venue. It is hard to go wrong in Charleston.

Precisely why. Charleston has so many amazing venus ranging from unique, historic, rustic, swanky, indoor and outdoor. When I visited to go venue shopping we went to ten places and I would have been happy with any of them.

</div><div>My list was at 10! I've since narrowed it to 6 - since we decided that we would rather be in historic Charleston, and indoors for the most part since it's going to be July, but we do need to have an outdoor area for cigars. I think I've got a good list now, but I hate to think that I could be missing something.

  • Hey everyone!

I am also out of town (Houston, TX), but we are both from SC and will be married in Charleston in Spring 2014! Smile My problem is trying to set a specific date while avoiding other big weekends in Charleston (and at the Citadel). I'm hoping to have things settled soon though as I know things book up way in advance!

Rice Mill is one of my favorite venues, I am just trying to see if it can work with my budget. I also love the Harbor Club, Boone Hall, and Patriot's Point. The William Aiken House is gorgeous (I attended an amazing reception there!) but it is out of my range. Any more thoughts on venues? I'd love to hear what info and pricing y'all have gotten!

    <div>Hi Kelsey,</div><div>
</div><div>Looks like you've got a pretty good list going - most of my venues are indoors, cause it's going to be so HOT in July, and you've got some more flexibility to be outdoors, and there are PLENTY of places!!</div><div>
</div><div>If I had my way, and could do the reception, etc. outside, I would have chosen the Cotton Dock at Boone Hall. It's gorgeous.</div><div>

A kinda off-the-beaten-path venue worth checking out is where we had our ceremony, which is the Confederate Home on Broad Street.  It is a great, centrally located property with a beautiful private garden and great large rooms inside too.  We had our ceremony in the garden but had the option of using an indoor room in case of bad weather.  And the rental fee is tax deductible because the property is run as a non-profit providing housing to elderly women.  I found it very reasonably priced, but it is wise to have a coordinator/planner who has previously been invovled in events there because it is a very unique space.  The only other real issue is the lack of parking, but that is pretty much an issue anywhere in the downtown historic district.  Here is a link to some of our pictures: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150160693428723.292785.90704383722&type=3

I am getting married in downtown Charleston on April 6, 2013! Thank you for posting some pictures up from your wedding :) I am also having my ceremony at The Confederate Home & College and I am so excited. Your pictures before, was that at The Joseph Aiken Carriage House? It looks so familiar and that is where we are staying! * For any Charleston brides who have not checked out this place, you should! You can't beat the price or location. It is a beautiful old home and the rooms are suites, which is perfect to get ready in! Our reception will be held at McCradys Florist: First Bloom Charleston Music: Jay Maxwell Ceremony Music: Classical Charleston Photography: CM Photography...Charles Merry(he is great and affordable!) Cake: DeClares Cakes (amazing tasting!) Rentals: Eventworks Hair: Serendipity Salon & Boutique - Alayna Makeup: Elina Mille Also, if any Chalreston brides haven't checked out weddingbee.com it's great for ideas and has a local Charleston board that is fairly active!
  • Wow your wedding sounds very similar to ours!  Yes we stayed at the Joseph Aiken Carriage House the night before (my mom, sister and I) and the night of the wedding (husband and I of course).  We had suite D I think and it was SO fabulous!  There is some off street parking and we had plenty of room for family to hang out while we got ready.  Our wedding was April 10, 2011 and the weather was fabulous and both the carriage house and Confederate Home gardens were in full bloom and green everywhere!  You will love it!  One of the big reasons I chose Joseph Aiken was to take pictures and do a first look in their garden since I knew they would still be setting up at the Confederate Home. It is also super easy to find on street parking around the property too since it is a residential area.  My mom even brought folding tables to set up food and snacks for people, the suite had a large bathroom in the LARGE bedroom and another half bath in the hall so it seriously could not have been more perfect.  I had a friend who did the same thing a few months later for her wedding after I told her about it.

  • Oh and I also used Elina Mille for airbrush makeup and she is the sweetest girl and did a fabulous job!  It was her first time every coming to the Joseph Aiken house so she had some trouble finding it.  And our DJ was Rhett from Jay Maxwell.  He did a great job, kept exactly the feel that I wanted after a short meeting with him a week before hand.  He was super professional and I'm really glad I ended up with him.  It was a little weird going to someone's private home to meet but he is a very nice guy and I can't speak highly enough about the Jay Maxwell company!  I also used Candice from YOJ Events to set up my ceremony and reception and make the bouquets.  Our wedding was super small and she gave us a great deal (probably because we had a noon ceremony on a Sunday).  She was very nice to work with and it was nice having someone who had set up events at the Confederate Home before because it is a unique venue, definitely not cookie-cutter.
