NWR: Adventures in home remodeling...

So this past week, FI and I thought it would be fun to buy new kitchen appliances. Fridge, range, microwave, dishwasher...the works! We have a medium sized kitchen, but our current microwave takes up the entire counter top. We decided to upgrade to an over-the-stove one. Ok, so Sunday comes, and YAY, our appliances arrive. I'm thinking "Good-bye old fridge from the 70's, hello more counter room". Strike one: The fridge didn't fit by a 1/2 inch. I saw it roll into my house and as we discovered that it wasn't going to fit my throat dropped into my stomach. We even tore out the entire cupboard above the current fridge so that the new one wouldn't be too tall. So, now we have our old 70's fridge with a big hole above it. Lame. Strike two: Our range wasn't going to be delivered until the end of August. They got there and told us that it was backordered. Strike three: The microwave didn't fit above the range! it was too big by 1/8 of an inch. So after 4 trips to Lowe's, 5 hours of labor, and sanding down our cupboards creating a saw dust covered house, we got the microwave in. Why is every wall and every cupboard and all of the floors un-even throughout our house? WHY? Why did the builders think it was a good idea to half A$$ everything in our house making it impossible to remodel? Seriously, sometimes being an home owner is suck o'licious.

I concur, Theo and I went through the same struggles with our fridge! I picked out the one I wanted waited thee weeks because it was backordered through Lowes and when it finally arrived the Lowes guys refused to bring it in because they measured it and it wouldn't fit....(we had just cut down our countertops and removed a section of our cabinet too.) At least you didnt get scolded for not measuring your space! (which we did but just not the correct way..how were we supposed to know had never bought a fridge before) We went back to Lowes right after (we live not even two miles away) And they tried to charge us for delivery AGAIN and when I complained the manager at the time says "well most people know to measure before ordering and setting up for delivery" I was fuming. We look back and laugh at it now! Being a homeowner has soo many joys, remodeling is not one of them. Especially since our home was built in the 50's!

We just bought a new fridge too.  Ours fits in a VERY tiny space... right behind our front door!  There is no room to cut into the counter to make more space, and our old fridge was VERY old, which means it was also smaller than most fridges are now.  So we carefully measured our space several times to make sure there were no mistakes before going shopping.  When we got to Best Buy we were reading all of the dimensions on the fridge.  Two that we liked were side-by-side and claimed to be the same size, but we thought they looked a little off.  My son happened to have a tape measure with him, so we measured them.  It turns out the measurements were off by about 1/2 inch, which isn't much but with our limited space the fridge wouldn't have fit if we bought the larger one!  So, sometimes it's the stores fault!

Life and death, energy and peace. If I stop today it was still worth it. Even the terrible mistakes that I made and would have unmade if I could. The pains that have burned me and scarred my soul, it was worth it, for having been allowed to walk where I've walked, which was to hell on earth, heaven on earth, back again, into, under, far in between, through it, in it, and above. ~ gia maria carangi
