cake recommendations

Do any of you ladies have any recommendations for a baker?  I would really like to find one that's budget-friendly.Also, I heard that sometimes the wedding cake everyone sees is a fake (cardboard covered in frosting) and only the part the bride and groom cut is real.  Guests are served from a sheet cake hiding in the back.  Supposedly this can save a ton of money.  Thoughts on this?  TIA

We asked our baker about this...and what she said was that the work on the outside is just as expensive as if it were a real cake.  We are going with Bella Manse for our cake.  She's wonderful!!  She is a bit more pricey...but she can figure out ways to help you with budget.  For example she can give you a small layered cake for the front of house and then have a sheet cake in the back for the rest. Good luck!

Grocery stores--no kidding! They make wedding cakes now. Giant has 3 layer ones for $150 and they are nice--they are the same cake you'd have for a birthday cake, so nothing fancy, but if you're going budget, it's an avenue.

We went with Fancy Wedding Cakes in Carlisle.  Tammi is wonderful and she delivers for free within 40 miles.  About Weddings is also good.

As stated previously, dummie cakes are not "the cheap way to go" as the bridal magazines try to tell you! The cost of the styrofoam dummy is about the same as real cake, plus the time and expense to decorate it is exactly the same. Also, some bakers actually price their kitchen cakes the same as a tiered cake.....therefore you would actually be paying for twice the cake. Bella Manse is a great place to go- she does wonderful work. I also recommend Rosie's Creative Cakes in Manheim - she does amazing work too. Depending on where your venue is: Oregon Dairy actually does a pretty good job at a reasonable price. Also, check out Jan Risser of Sweet Encounters in Denver/Reamstown. She is very talented and her cakes are yummy!

ITA about dummy cakes being more expensive than the real deal - we looked into that route. I also looked into the cakes from bakeries like Giant, Walmart and Sam's. They are doing really nice work!

Providence Spotts in York is amazing! Very affordable and the absolute best cake we tasted (and we tried a lot of places). Contact info, review, and pics in my bio.

I live in York and checked in to Providence, Bella Manse, and Sprinkles and Swirls.  I thought Sprinkles and Swirls had the best pricing and Jasmine was really awesome at our meeting.  She's located in Lewisberry (kind of between York and Harrisburg).  I'm getting ready to send my deposit to her for our cake.  Check out her websitesprinklesandswirls.net/

We're using Crystal's Custom Cakes in Carlisle...Her cake is amazing! And she bakes it the morning of your event in most cases! When we went for our tasting she had baked jumbo cupcakes right before we came, the kitchen smelled so good when you walked it! She was VERY reasonable and great to deal with.
