Engagement Photographer vs. Wedding Photographer

Hey everyone,

My fiance and I got engagement photos done and we really liked the service. Is it common to have the Engagement photographer do your wedding photos as well, or do most people prefer a different perspective?

Thanks guys. That's 2 questions from me in, like, 30 mins. Wow LOL

My FI and I had our engagement photo's done by a good friend. The bonus being he's a professional photographer. He's in our wedding so we decided to go with another photographer (which I found on Wedding Chicks...a great website by the way). Photographers usually include engagement shots in the price for your wedding photo's. It's a bit extra but well worth it before it gets you used to the camera. Personally, I think it's way easier to get both done by the same vendor.

Many photographers offer engagement photos as part of their wedding package. It gives them and the couple a chance to get to know each other. Sometimes couples also do the engagement photos first, to test out how they feel about the photographer before booking them for the wedding.

But yes, it's pretty common to have the same photographer do both - unless you find that you're not happy with the engagement photos.

if you're happy with his work, why not book him? It'll put another check on your list and save you the stress of finding someone else!

    Hey ladies,

sorry to hijack this thread but what would be a reasonable price to hire someone for 10 hrs on the wedding day. i have been looking at different webisites just to see the price range but there seems to be some big gaps with the pricing. There are definitely ones that sticks out to me in terms what I see in the portfolio but its so expensive.

    Hey Cayla...
    I've seen all ranges too.

    I'm paying $2800 for...
    engagement session
    10 hrs on wedding day
    2 photographers
    coffee table album
disc including all our photos from the day

It's a lot ... but looking at how lovely her photos are I felt it was really reasonable compared to some Toronto photog rates.

There is a huge range in prices... I remember seeing anywhere from like $1,000 to $10,000+... the sky's the limit. The thing with photographers is that you really get what you pay for. The cheaper photographers tend to have formulaic (often cheesy) poses and don't know how to capture the candid moments. The more expensive photographers tend to be a lot more artistic - they edit their photos for a more artsy effect, and they're usually much better at capturing the candid shots and the essence of the day.

What's "reasonable" really differs a lot, so I'd recommend that you get the best that you can afford.

I think it's good to have your wedding photographer do your engagements so you can get used to them and comfortable in front of them... but I also see it would be neat to find someone with a different style to allow you to use a different location and a different style to get some more shots if the price was right.

Two-zeds - it is common to use both. As mentioned before, some will throw in the engagement package should you decide to use them for your wedding. Once you enter into negotiating, you will find that some photographers are more accomdating or willing to bend a little than others.

CaylaSummer- the sky is the limit to price ranges. The more you want, the more it will cost. Negotiation and having a budget in mind before talking to vendors is key!
