Need advice...friend getting married in USA...vent

Hi Ladies,

I need to a bit of support/advice...I have a girlfriend living in South Carolina and we have been very close for about 8 years now. Her fiancé is in the army and therefore the military is basically dictating their wedding plans (as it is dependent on potentially relocating to california etc etc).

They got engaged in the summer and due to circumstances, are getting married at the end of January. It's short notice and I am struggling with trying to figure out if my FI and I can afford to go !!!! It kills me because I would do anything to go but on the other hand, flights are like $700 each, not including hotel accomodations for 2 nights....

My FI is the logical one in the relationship and he isn't sure we can afford it but all I want to do is put in on my visa and figure it out later! It's causing tension between us but how can I NOT go to her wedding?!?!?!

Have you considered driving? My friend visits his parents in NC frequently. He leaves on Friday night and is always back by Monday morning. It's crazy, but would cut costs.

I agree with dixie. Many people drive to Buffalo and fly from there. I also agree petite that driving can be a another option if flying doesn't work out for you.

Try Jet Blue, if it goes there to NC.  Their customer service is awesome and checked baggage is free!

Driving's the other option so that the rest of your money can be spent on hotels.  But just things to consider.

My supervisor makes us book our flights through Vayama.com whenever we go to conferences in the states. I booked Kingston -> Toronto -> Virginia for $735 round-trip including all taxes booked a month in advance. Note that the Kingston -> Toronto plane is usually around $500 on its own. I couldn't even book the Toronto -> Virginia flight on the Air Canada web site for less than $700. I don't know how Vayama does it.

For hotels, your friend may already have group rates but you can also try Hotwire or priceline and see if the rates are lower. Don't forget to check to see if you have any frequest flyer miles. I was close to booking flights to Vancouver for $600 each but then decided to check my points and realized that I can book both of our flights using my points.

Have you concidered going by yourself. It would only be a couple of days and you wouldn't have to pay for 2 flights. Not the ideal option but if she is mainly your friend... I don't know. Just a thought

Farecompare.com for flights out of Buf. Hotwire.com for hotel
  • If you end up flying out of Buffalo, you can get cheap tickets to the airport on Megabus now, I believe.
