cheap printers

i'm making my own invitations and need to get them printed. i'd like to print them on a textured paper, a little bit like water colour paper. i took a sample to the printing house (a chain) and they quoted me a minimum $200 for 50 prints. and that's only 1 side. i'll need double sided printing. they said because of the textured paper i want to use they need to do a special printing process that costs more. this is way out of my price range.

does anyone know a printer that could do this for cheaper?

    I own my own colour laser printer and tried a test run on some textured paper I got as a sample and it came out HORRIBLE.  I have no idea what you would need to do to have it look good, but I would bet it would be expensive no matter where you go.

    Linen paper works fine though with no extra effort.  I don't know if you'd be willing to switch papers...

    What about those transparent papers... you print on them and then tie them onto the textured paper so the tansparent paper is infront but smaller and the textured paper sticks out the sides?  I don't know about this for double sided though.

    DO you have your heart set on DIY? Because Vista Print is amazing. I got the highest paper quality and spent less than $100 on my 80 invitations and matching RSVP cards and 150 address lables. I selected the slowest delivery but it came under in under a month! Excellent quality.

    I find with printers what you pay is what you get. HP has one for $50 but it is clunky and jams very easily. I don't know if your type of paper would work. Have you tried Staples? If you provide the paper and the design, you should be able to swing a deal

    I would suggest keeping your eyes out for sales at Best Buy or Futureshop, and talking to the reps there (esp. Best Buy) about what the best option in terms of a printer will be for specialty papers.

    I think in the long run though, for the quality you're looking for, you're best to bite the bullet and get them professionally printed... just shop around for more options I guess.

    I would switch out the paper.  Isn't the point of DIY to save money?

    Printer.ca (located in Hamilton) has been fantastic for our DIY invitations, etc.  It's also reasonably priced.
