my parish is merging!

I have quite a dilemma with which I'm hoping you all can help (sorry, this is a little long).  My parish is merging with another parish.  The actual church building will still be the same, but the parishes will be combined and under one new name.  As of right now, we don't know what the new name will be.  I am getting married in July, so we need to order invitations very soon.  We won't know the new name until after we need to order the invitations.

I don't know what to put on my invitations!  I am thinking of putting the current church name with an insert in the envelope that says the wedding website info telling people the name will be changing and will be updated asap on the website.  What do you think?  How would we word that?

Hello from a fellow Upstater.  Albany here.

This is a hard one.  I would probably wait till the last possible moment to order and try to find the new name.

I think your idea of having the insert telling people to check the website is a good idea.  Maybe something like "Our Parish is merging and the name of our Parish may be different at the time of the wedding.  The church and wedding will be the same building but please check out website for the new church name and any other information"

  • When the parishes in my diocese merged, the original chruch's name basically stayed put.  So we had Our Lady of Guadalupe parish is the new name and then there is the St. Luke's campus and St. Lawrence campus.

So maybe just have the insert like PP said and then once the new name of the church is out, you can update your wedding website with the new info.
  • You can do that. I'd also make use of good ol' word of mouth (though imperfect, of course)

I would also make include the street address on the invitations (I know that some people say to do this and others don't). That will help the find it (even if there is some name confusion), and it will still come up on Google and such by the original name.

I'm sure that in July things will still be in transition, even if the merger is finalized, as the name situation settles down, people get used to stuff, etc.
