This is what it said about NFP:

Natural Family Planning

Natural Family Planning, or fertility awareness, combines the rhythm method, the basal body temperature method and the cervical mucus method. In a nutshell, it’s a way to avoid getting pregnant without using any traditional birth control hormones or protection such as condoms.

This method is the only form of birth control deemed acceptable by the Catholic Church and doesn’t require any invasive procedures or hormones, so it’s good for those who either can’t or don’t want to use other options (like hormones) or those who just want to avoid getting pregnant right away (but wouldn’t be devastated if it happened). Why? It’s a way to prevent pregnancy, but in typical use (which refers to the average use), it fails about 25 percent of the time (making it the least effective form of birth control). Make sure you know all the risks before going with this plan. Visit AmericanPregnancy.org for more information.

Yeah, I wish they'd stop including that method as it's proven ineffective.

They include it because they assume that's what you're referring to when you say, "NFP."

Perhaps that's where the 25%failure rating comes in? IDK.

I find it interesting that they don't include barrier methods.

Ugh, I was so annoyed. I downloaded a charting app for my new phone, then when I was playing around with it, I saw that "Rhythm Method" is like the first of the choices you can get on their "premium" version.

    Not using that one. :/

The Rhythm Method continued myth annoys the crap out of me.

NFP only has a failure rate that high IF YOU USE IT INCORRECTLY!!!! If you don't take your birth control pills properly, it can have a high failure rate too! In fact, I know more pill oops babies than NFP oops babies.

Drives me nuts. Especially when people complain the method failed them while admitting they didn't use it properly.

At least the comments are positive.

Fertility Awareness Method wasnt even mentioned. Of course, teh only difference is that it allows for the use of condoms, but still, many non-religious are using FAM, particularly to try to achieve pregnancy.

  • edited December 2011
Although to achieve pregnancy, whether people use FAM or NFP is a moot point, because they are not using barriers during their fertile time (or else they reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally need a refresher on where babies come from).

I think she said for achieving pregnancy, they are the same. If you're trying to conceive, you're likely not using condoms

This. I was responding to Calypso's comment (but failed to quote) that lots of couples are using FAM to TTC. Like Riss said, if you are TTC, you probably are not using condoms.

Um, it's pretty darn exciting. =) Pretty much everything is taken care of, so we get to just enjoy ourselves. We've been up in the Texas panhandle looking at houses all weekend -- now we just have to figure out if we want to live in the city or in the middle of nowhere.

Looking at houses sounds like fun. We are still a few years away from upgrading from condo to house, but we still talk about it, especially since the housing market is so down around here. That said, I'm definately more of a city-girl than a middle-of-nowhere girl, so for me, the answer would be easy! Tongue out

Haha, both of our options are in pretty remote parts of Texas. FI starts training for his new job tomorrow, and based on what they say, we'll be looking for a house either in the same town as his job (middle-of-nowhere) or in the closest "major" city (about an hour away, but way more opportunities for me to find work and for resale of our house). Either way, I love the country, so I'm happy to be getting out there!
