Catholic Weddings

Wedding program ideas

hi ladies,

I was not planning on making a wedding program but I think in my case I have to since about 60% of our guest are not catholic.

So the church gave a copy of the order of the ceremony. I can't have all the songs  and readings on there for copyright reasons. I want to make a book fold type of program. I was going to to put the order of the ceremony in side and then I thought at the front of the book it would say
"Jane and John's nuptial ceremony"
then the date below, time and the church's name"

Is this ok. Do I have to check with the church to do this? I just want to make it personal and not just have a wedding program. you know what i mean.
Thoughts? Any other ideas?

It's up to your church.  Some churches care about what goes into the programs, and some don't.  (Mine didn't care).  So you need to check with your church.

Wow, really?  That sucks.  Is it just certain songs or readings? I was wondering about this for my wedding programs (2 years from now).  I wanted to have the songs in there just so people didn't have to flip through the missal, and more importantly, I would want the readings in there for those who couldn't hear as well.

If your church has copyright clearance, then sometimes it's possible.  But people having to use the books is no big deal.  Seriously.  My wedding was only about 1/3 Catholic, but we told people we'd love it if they tried their best to sing, and they did!

My parish made ours which was also a vey simple "book" format... the only thing that was "spelled out" was the music for the responsorial psalm, but they have the appropriate permissions to do so, of course :)  The remainder of it was referencing our hymnal for the mass parts, responses, etc!  I put images of our program proof in my bio... I don't have a template for it.

It really depends on your parish as far as what it will allow you to include and not include!  If they aren't making them for you or providing a template... I don't think that there's much more that they can dictate beyond not permitting copyrighted material.

Okay so I checked with my church and I'm allowed to personalize it as long as it doesnt have the readings from the bible and as well as the hymn. I can only list where the readings are in the bible.

So my other question now is since we have a lot of people coming that are not catholic I wanted to include reminders in the program. for example, I heard that photographs are not allowed once the ceremony has begun. The altar is off limits to the guests...
I say this because my my fiance's family will not know this as in his family's church you can do both.

Would this be tacky if I include this in the program?  What's the best way to write this in the program?

Do you have a wedding coordinator at your parish?  You may not necessarily need to include specific information about specifically what is off-limits in the church but perhaps rely on your wedding coordinator to let people know if they're doing anything out of line.  I think that wedding guests are generally pretty respectful sorts of people, so would likely just arrive and take a seat :)  You could maybe include a note somewhere along the lines of "Welcome to *church name*.  Please be respectful of this sacred space and refrain from photos during the Mass."  You could also have an announcement at the beginning before Mass starts if you have a cantor leading an opening hymn that could welcome everyone?

Thank you!  We love our parish :)  I never cease to be amazed every time that I go to Mass there.

I'm confused why you cannot have hymns or Bible readings listed. Many hymns are copyright protected (many are not)--but what about the Bible readings? I do not believe the Bible is copyright protected. Is it a unique translation of the Bible that is copyright protected?

I am trying to list out the readings and hymns as well, but I found the biggest impediment is just that it makes for a very long program, lol

If you are copying from the lectionary, that is copyrighted.

Scripture at mass is intended to be proclaimed...it is in the proclamation and hearing that is the mystical experience of the Word. It is not intended to be read by the congregation. Missalletes for Sunday masses are there for aid in understanding/hard of hearing.

As far as hymns go, I think it is unfortunate if they are discouraging putting lyrics in the program. People usually do not participate well at weddings in general, so anything you can give them to help it is good. My parish pays a yearly license to print words for a songsheet, so we can do that. If you really want to print words, you can obtain a license from the publishing companies for the songs you are using. I believe you can print public domain songs without any license.
