Happy Weekend!

Hey guys!  It's a beautiful day (again!) here.  I'm at the university cleaning out my lab area and desk and working on some publication edits still.

I reclaimed my brain yesterday, which was nice.  I took my time getting ready in the morning, then got a mani/pedi, and spent the rest of the day aimlessly wandering two malls (one indoor and one outdoor) in the area by myself.  I did slightly expand my wardrobe for work, but it was mostly good for clearing my brain since I really wasn't thinking about anything at all.  So, I had a good "me" day, and I'm ready to go for the new job on Monday!

I'll still try to get on in the mornings and start a thread, but I don't know if I'll have time or not, so please start one if you have things you want to talk about and I haven't done it!

Please keep me in your T&Ps this week that I know what the heck I'm doing with this new job!

    Hi docta!

I am sure I missed it, what will you be doing at your new job again?

It sounds like your weekend is off to a great start. Take some time to relax and enjoy this beautiful weather before you start your new job on Monday. Good luck.

I have been doing some organizing and folding laundry. I went to bed early last night I was so exhausted. H and I were going to go to the movies, but we are broke. I don't get paid until next Friday and all the bills hit. Tonight we have a party to go to for one of our friends who just completed his AIT training in the Army. HIm and his FI will be moving to Texas soon.

My body is finally feeling better, which is a good thing. I did over $8k damage to my car by hitting the frigging deer. H and I were sort of hoping they would total it b/c it will probably never be the same and the value is not going to be what it was before.

I start a new position on Monday at work. They have taken me out of the classroom b/c my other teacher hated me from the start. I will be working with all age groups and filling in where I am needed. I will miss my kids, but will still get to see them, so it won't be that bad.

docta, a good "me" day was definitely well deserved! Good luck with the new job.

    Missy, glad you're feeling better.

DH and I are cooking and cleaning today, in addition to entertaining his cousin (Darian's future godfather). Tomorrow some of his old friends from high school are coming over for a meet and greet. We're excited to entertain people other than family after spending the past few weeks mostly cooped up with ourselves. :)

Have fun at the zoo, Lala!  The Cleveland Zoo is pretty decent, and it's so nice outside!

Missy - My position is a material scientist.  I don't know what my exact project is yet (nor will I be able to discuss it when I do!), but basically, I'll be evaluating new materials for possible use in things that you use every day :).  BTW, I'm not sure you saw me ask in another thread last week, what does your H do again?  I feel like it's some type of engineering, but I don't remember for sure.  And has he looked elsewhere in Ohio for jobs?

They just opened a new elephant area & they have a relatively new hospital with visitor viewing rooms, too.  So if they need to do a procedure on an animal,   they have interpretors explaining what the vets are doing!

docta - yeah, I answered you, but it was later as I had to get back to work.

H is a computer enginneer. His degree is a blend between computer and electronics engineering. He is looking outside of Columbus, places like Wright Patt in Dayton and elsewhere. We are staying with his parents and they don't live far from Dayton and Springfield at all. He is looking for anything and is willing to travel not only to work but as part of the job description/duties.

Oh, sorry, I didn't see it!  If he strikes out in SW Ohio, he should look in NE Ohio.  We've very heavy into engineering of all kinds up here!

You are fine, don't worry about it. Like I said, it was later and I responded thinking you maybe wouldn't see it.

That is good info to know about there being a lot of engineering jobs in NE Ohio. I mean we really aren't settled into our own place or anything, so we could potentially move north. I just want to be in Ohio and within driving distance of seeing friends and family on the weekends and holidays.

Docta and Missy, I hope you both enjoy your new positions!

Today I went to the outlet mall an hour away to stock up on teaching appropriate clothes.  As a grad student, I'm typically in jeans and t-shirts, but my supervisors expect me in trousers or skirts and blouses this semester to give the image of authority to the students I'm teaching, since they are only four years younger than I am.  On the way back, FI and I had a flat tire, so tonight I'm making margaritas and watching the Red Sox game to wind down a bit.

The new semester starts this Tuesday, so I'll start classes both as a student and (for the first time) as a TA this week.  I don't really know why they give us the title TA, since in my department, we teach classes on our own rather than assist or co-teach.  Regardless, I'm nervous, terrified, and excited.  Butterflies abound.  :D

Katy - I am sure you will do just fine teaching on your own. Even though I have only taught younger children, co-teaching is hard. The reason why I am stepping down is b/c my co-teacher and I didn't get along. She was very "my way is the only way" and shot down a lot of my ideas. She would also tell the kids they could do something when I told them otherwise. Mixed messages for 2 year olds is never a good thing. They thrive on consistency and routine.

Happy Sunday!  We spent the weekend at H's parents' house, and I got to see my nephew today.  Lsst night was H's 20th year high school reunion.  I am exhausted.

Here's Fr. Valle's homily of the week.  I love the conclusion.

    I.  From Blessed to Satan in a week
Recall that just last week we saw Peter splashing into the water and nearly drowning for his  lack of faith.  This week, Peter is told that he is blessed and that the Father in heaven himself has told Peter that Jesus is the Christ.  One day Jesus calls Peter blessed and the next day he calls him Satan.  Peter, like most of us is, both, very noble and not so perfect.
    II.  Simon Peter
Peter is anything but perfect. In fact, you have to wonder sometimes what exactly Jesus was thinking when he chose Peter to lead his Church.  Peter is ignorant, brash, none too bright and stubborn.    What does Jesus see in this guy?  He is flawed and coarse.  It is deeply ironic but I think that if Peter were alive to today, he would not even be able to get into a papal conclave, let alone have a snowball’s chance in Miami of getting elected.
    III.   Zio Antonio
One of the most important people in my life was my Zio Antonio.  Zio is like the Spanish, Tio, it means uncle–actually my Zio was my mother’s uncle and my great uncle.  But, growing up, he was more like a second Father to my brother and I.  He was a great big bear of a man.  When I was six, we moved to Florida and moved in with him.  Zio used to be a cook on a trans-Atlantic schooner.  He ran away from home when he was 9, back in 1911.  Zio would cook for us every night.  He barely spoke English.  He would sit out back at our house in North Miami, sing Italian songs and tend grapefruit, orange and lemon trees.  Why it is that old Italian men always grow citrus? I do not know.
    IV.  Leonardo da Vinci
Every year my Zio would go to Italy for a few months to be with the family.  When he was 75, he went over.  He would always travel alone, even at 75.  That particular year, he was routed through Leonardo da Vinci in Rome.  When he was in the bathroom, three teenage boys came in, surrounded him and tried to steal his wallet. It was a serious mistake.  My Zio always carried a cane with him and as a young man was a boxer.  By the time carbineri got there, my Zio, had broken his cane, two noses and three fingers on the boys. They had to pull him off three kids who, if you added all of their ages together, were not as old as my Zio was.
    V.  Conclusion
The point of my story here is, of course, not an incitement to vigilante violence.  The point is that God works through us as we are, with our faults and shortcomings and junk.  My Zio was the most just man I have ever met in my life and the most generous too!  During and after the Second World War, my family in Italy had it very bad.  My Zio was in New York at the time.  Every single week, he would send a big trunk full of supplies to the family. As my Zia Nina said, Zio Antonio kept the whole family alive for those years.  I, obviously, have never met St. Peter, though hopefully I’ll will meet him someday.  But I did know and love my Zio Antonio and I imagine that Peter was much like him –a  tough, gruff, imperfect man who lived his life with great passion.  Forget perfection. Seek passion.  The Gospel is a wild and fiery thing and it requires wild and resilient hearts to bear its heat.  Peter tells Jesus: “Leave me, Lord, I am a sinful man.”  But Jesus does not leave him.  Because Jesus does not need pious and saintly wimps; he needs real men and women with hearts fire and blood.  He needed that then, and he needs us now to be full of the passions of Peter.   Simon Peter, pray for us.
