Solemnities

Friday March 25, 2011 is the solemnity of the Annunciation.

Solemnities mean there is no fasting or abstaining from meat.....

so happy meat eating (if you do that kind of thing)

Thanks. I did not know that.

Well H gave up red meat for Lent anyway, so it has limited my cooking quite a bit. We will be helping out with the Fish Fry at our church and then probably eat some leftover tuna casserole I made the other night.

Random sidetrack. When my grandma gave birth to my mom on this date, her mother said the proper thing to name my mom would be Annunziata. My mom thought she really dodged a bullet on that one. LOL

ha - yup!! I think last year St. Joseph's feast was on a Friday as well - so the fasts were lifted in order to celebrate.

My Catholic boss fights me on it every time it comes up - he doesn't believe me!

Yea...I know. I never knew about the solemnity thing until more recently,..

however, it is actually liturgically incorrect (season wise that is) to fast or do acts of penance (abstaining from meat, etc) on solemnties. It's another Sunday. You don't fast when the bridegroom is present.

Not sure if this has been quoted yet.... (just for cliarification for those who are skeptical)
from the code of canon law:
Can.  1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
