We don't really have any rules about when we put the tree up or take it down. I guess all that will probably change when we have kids though. I know my Aunt & Uncle used to put the tree up on Christmas Eve and let the kids to believe that Santa brought the tree with the presents. I think that is pretty cute, but I also think I would like to have my tree up a little longer before Christmas.
Posted by MissySue20
That is cute but I agree I want my tree up longer than that. We put ours up the day after Thanksgiving and take it down January 7 (family tradition, we leave it up for the 3 kings).
Question: Do you put your tree up before or after Advent. I use to put mine up the day after Thanksgiving but FI and his family put theirs up after Advent. So new rule in my house tree goes up after Advent.. This is new to me. M

We put the tree up the week before Christmas and take it down after Three Kings Day.

I have a big party that day so it stays up longer than most

We got our tree last weekend because that's when it fit our schedule to get a tree. We're still working on figuring out traditions.

10 questions:

1) Do you have white lights or multi-colored lights on your Christmas Tree
? White

2) Star or Angel on top? Angel

3) Midnight Mass, Christmas Day Mass or Other? Saturday Children's Mass- at whatever parish the most of my nieces/nephews are participating in

4) What do you do on Christmas Eve
? Mass, then dinner at my brothers, then wrapping lots of presents and maybe going to a cousin's house.

5) What do you do on Christmas Day? For the past 13 years I've usually spent the night at my brother's house b/c it's way more fun to wake up on Christmas morning with little kids! This year we are staying at my mom's, though.

6) How many people are you buying gifts for this year? No idea. At least our parents, my husbands immediate family... not sure what we are doing for my family yet (I have a ton of nieces and nephews).

7) What are you looking forward to this Christmas? Celebrating our first Christmas together and spending nearly two weeks together with our families as well.

8) What are you not looking forward to this Christmas? That it will be my first birthday and first Christmas without my dad. He was all about holidays and family- so this is going to be a tough one.

9) What's your favorite Christmas song? Joy to the World and Christmas Wrapping.

10) What's your favorite Christmas movie? Miracle on 34th St (the original one) and An Affair to Remember (it has a Christmas scene at least)

As to when we put up the tree/take it down... My birthday is a week before Christmas, and my parents/siblings/family always made sure to separate the two. We never decorated until after my birthday, and usually spent the day after the Epiphany taking everything down (which also happened to be my dad's birthday). My parents grew up with santa decorating their tree- that was part of their gift.

My family spend Christmas in the Caribbean for many years after my mom was killed. My dad said that since Christmas would never be the same again, we would have to find a way to do it well but different.

Now, we are all grown up with families and do Christmas with our own families.

That was the start of my 12th Night parties. Even though all of my family celebrates mostly at home now, that one party night is really in honor of my mom. I think she would be happy to see that we did adapt and go on, as hard as it was.

We keep our tree up at least until the Theophany. For the Easterners at least, it's a "more Holy" day than Christmas, following only Pascha and Pentecost in significance. We also have some Orthodox family, and the next day is "Russian Christmas." So we're still celebrating well beyond December 25!

In Response to Christmas Poll?:
10 questions:
1) Do you have white lights or multi-colored lights on your Christmas Tree ? The last two years, I've only had a small artificial tree, with multicolored lights.

2) Star or Angel on top ? Angel

3) Midnight Mass, Christmas Day Mass or Other ? Midnight Mass at this tiny, lovely church not too far from my fiance's house.
4) What do you do on Christmas Eve ? Just spend a quiet evening together, maybe watch EWTN or a Christmas movie, then go to Mass.
5) What do you do on Christmas Day ? Go to his sister's and spend the day with the family
6) How many people are you buying gifts for this year ? I only buy a few "under the tree" gifts - for my fiance and for his son. On his side of the family, we play "Rob Your Neightbor," so we buy one small gift together for that. For everyone else, I give donations to Heifer International in their name.
7) What are you looking forward to this Christmas ? Spending time with my fiance and my family, and relaxing while off work.
8) What are you not looking forward to this Christmas ? The uncertain weather and being away from my cats on Christmas Day.
9) What's your favorite Christmas song ? "Do You Hear What I Hear?"
10) What's your favorite Christmas movie ? It's a Wonderful Life. But I love all kinds of Christmas movies, old, new, sappy, silly. I'm just a sucker for Christmas movies.
