Music HELP!

Ok, for a VERY traditional Catholic Mass Ceremony what do you guys recommend for music?  I have a basic layout/guide to follow but am having a tough time making selections.  What are some selections you have used?  I like the Mass of Creation.  Did y'all have the responsorial psalm sung or read?  I'm drawing a blank on offertory hymns (should this just be instrumental?).  Did y'all have a hymn for the sign of peace?  Also need help with prelude and bridal party processional music.  I like the Overture to the Royal Fireworks by Handel for the bride's processional but don't feel like it's "Catholic."  Thanks so much for the help!

<div>What do you mean by "very traditional"? In my mind, that does not mean mass of creation.</div><div>
</div><div>you also gotta make sure that the new translation is used.</div><div>
</div><div>Technically, if there is music, the psalm should be sung. There is no need for a hymn at the sign of peace.</div>

haha. To me, "very traditional" means the Extraordinary Form and Latin.

As my entire (tiny) parish is invited, we are using the service music for an ordinary Sunday Mass.

For preludes, we'll give the organist the programs for the concerts we attended when we first dating. These included Bach's "In dulci jubilo, "Tocccata and fugue in d minor," and "Toccata and fugue in F Major." Also Mendelsshon and other standard organ repertoire. I trust the organist (and I probably haven't even met him! - I trust my Priest's recommendation.).

The offertory hymn will be John Newton's wedding hymn. I can never remember the title.

Processional hymn is "The Church's One Foundation."

Our Rite doesn't have a responsorial Psalm or extended Peace.
  • Hello!  If you'll check out the sticky at the top of the page, there is a link to a website with some music suggestions from some of our users!  That might help you!

For your questions: I agree that the Psalm should be sung.  We had a hymn for communion, and in my mind the congregation would have sung, but it ended up just being the cantor (accompanied on harp).

Ditto for me. I picked You are Mine for the preparation of the gifts, and Table of Plenty for communion. Unfortunately because it was so difficult to coordinate with the music director I didn't get lyrics or hymn numbers put in the programs nor did she announce them, so I'm not sure if anyone sang along. We sang and the priest sang but I was completely unaware of what anyone else was doing. My husband and I like to sing so we usually sing when we attend weddings, but it seems when the couple has a friend or hires someone who is very talented to sing, then no one else wants to sing and it ends up being kind of awkward. But in theory I like the idea of everyone being able to participate and join in the hymn.
